To achieve Lizzo’s smokey eye, Rose recommends using tape to apply the eyeshadow first so you can clean up any excess product with a makeup wipe as you create a smoky brown, winged eye. As for the lashes, Rose suggests keeping them natural and longer on the outer corner.

Smoky Radiance

Even when Normani opts for minimal makeup, her skin always has a radiant glow. We recommend choosing a foundation with a satin finish, then applying a soft contour. ‘’For the eyes, a satin cool brown eyeshadow would be perfect for creating this shape,’’ Rose says. ‘’The easiest way to do this is to look straight in the mirror and start from the outer corner of the eye, creating a line towards your temple.’’ If you want to make your eyes subtly pop, finish off the look with a yellow-gold eyeshadow on the inner corner of the eye and some mascara.

Classic Red

The best part of Selena Gomez’s look is her glowing skin, though we're also partial to her defined brows and that perfect red lip. To achieve this look, keep your makeup fresh with a soft pink cheek and a bold lipstick shade. Rose recommends using a lip liner before applying lipstick. ‘’Choose a magenta red lipstick with a shine to it,’’ she adds.

Bold Basics

Nobody does eye makeup quite like Adele—but you'll find her signature winged liner is easier to recreate than you'd think with the right technique. To achieve this bold look, Rose recommends using a cream or gel eyeliner with a brush. ‘’Instead of starting in the outer corner to create the wing, start at the lower lash line and extend the liner past your inner corner,’’ she adds.

For the lids, we recommend using a matte, soft white shadow. To help with the creation of the shape, remember to prime your eyes beforehand. ‘’To take the eyeshadow further, connect the brown crease color into your brow and nose contour,’’ says Rose. To keep this look work-friendly, we suggest choosing matte shades for the whole face.

Subtle Glitter

Hailey Bieber’s makeup look is perfect for days when you have after-work plans. This look is all about the bold lip, subtle glitter shadow, and fluffy brows. To achieve it, Rose recommends using a minimal amount of product. ‘’Choose a soft pink cream blush and fluff your eyebrows with a brow gel,’’ she adds.

On days when you don’t feel like reaching for the glitter, this look can still turn heads with a well-blended eyeshadow. All you need to do is blend a little bit around the eye area. For the lips, Rose suggests choosing a satin-finish burgundy lipstick, along with a lip liner in the same color.

Striking Smolder

As the brain behind one of the most iconic makeup brands of our time, Rihanna is always ready to deliver sassy and striking makeup looks. According to makeup artist Amy Barrington, this look is all about the smokey eye. ‘’When applying a smokey eye, I like to use a black kohl pencil like Urban Decay’s 24-7 Glide On Eye Pencil ($22) to get the shape, and then blend. Bobbi Brown’s Eye Blender Brush is perfect for softening any harsh lines or edges,’’ she says. As for that beautiful lip combo, MUA Danielle Aleshea Mason recommends using Morphe’s Color Pencil ($5) in the shade Coffee & Kissy.

Divine Glow


Rosie Huntington-Whiteley’s healthy, dewy makeup look requires a good base. To prep, Barrington recommends a luminous primer. ‘’For the foundation, use a brush and work from the middle of the face to the outside, and don’t forget to blend as you go to avoid foundation lines,’’ she adds.

For full, pouty lips, use a lip scrub before application. We recommend the Lush Cosmetics Bubblegum Lip Scrub ($13) followed by a creamy lipstick like Burberry's Full Kisses ($37). Rose recommends applying layers for a more intense color, followed by a plumping gloss like Too Faced's Lip Injection ($29).

Major Lashes

Katy Perry’s work-appropriate makeup look is all about the lashes. ‘’If you are new to wearing falsies, I recommend Sweed Lashes (Tête à Tête) ($16). To apply, use tweezers and remember to leave the eyelash glue on the lashes for 30-40 seconds to get tacky before applying,’’ Barrington says. Lashes always stick on much better with this process.

According to Mason, it’s Katy’s fluffy brows that steal the show. ‘’They’re not too defined and still accentuate the shape and arch. I would recommend Zoeva's Eyebrow Pencil ($16) in the shade Black/Brown to achieve this look,’’ she adds.

Metal Moment

If you're bold enough to try a shimmery, metallic eyeshadow (and your office environment allows), Lady Gaga’s daring look can provide the work makeup inspiration you need. ‘’Layer as much as you need if you want a dramatic look, and apply a little less to keep it simple,’’ says Barrington.

When using glittery eyeshadow, Barrington recommends applying it before foundation to avoid drops of eye makeup getting on your face. We recommend Urban Decay's 24/7 Moondust Shadow ($22) in the shade Cosmic.

Bronzed and Beautiful


Kim Kardashian’s easy bronzed look is all about the skin and brows. To contour like a pro, Barrington recommends using a bronzer two shades deeper than your natural skin tone. ‘’Apply a small amount on your cheeks, hairline, jawline, and the sides of your nose. Don’t forget to blend to avoid harsh lines,’’ she adds.

If you love a bold and dramatic lash but don’t fancy wearing falsies to work, Maybelline's Colossal Mascara ($9) will do the trick, according to Mason, who adds, ‘’I’ve been using this mascara for years, and it definitely does what it says on the tube!’’

Go-To Graphic


Who said a graphic makeup look needed to be over the top? Keep it simple by focusing on the eyes and lips. According to Barrington, you’ll need a steady hand to achieve this look. ‘’Use a cream eyeliner and a thin eyeliner brush and create a V shape from the corner of your eye to just above your socket line,’’ she says. Add Dior's Lip Maximizer ($35) in Rosewood to complete the look.


The star of Doja Cat’s bold, well-defined eye look is the glossy effect on her lids. To take your eye look to the next level, use an angled liner brush with cream eyeliner for a more defined line. 

‘’I would recommend 3ina's The Eye Gloss ($17), as it creates an ultra-dewy, wet effect,’’ Rose advises. ‘’For best results, apply the gloss using your ring finger and lightly skim across the lid. For those who are a little less experienced, use a synthetic brush.’’

No-Makeup Makeup

Kelly Rowland’s " no-makeup makeup " look is perfect for anyone who takes a minimal approach to makeup. Spending time on skin prep is key to achieving this look. Barrington recommends ensuring skin is exfoliated and well-moisturized before applying makeup. ‘’I love the Nars Cosmetics Pore and Shine Control Primer ($36) as a base accompanied with Bobbi Brown's Nude Finish Tinted Moisturizer ($48), which is perfect for barely there coverage,’’ she says.

If you want to use a bit of blush to elevate the look, ‘’apply it in a C shape from your temple to your cheekbones,’’ Barrington says. For best results, always apply blush two fingers away from your nose and two fingers away from the bottom of your eye.

Makeup Artist Work Schedules

We have a couple of posts that detail exactly what it's like to BE a makeup artist, and today we'll look at makeup artist work schedules and makeup artist working conditions. If you decide to become a makeup artist, what will your work week be like? What hours do makeup artists work?

Just as we posted in our "Where Do MUAs Work" post... it depends on what kind of makeup artist you become! Here's an overview.

Makeup Artist Work Schedules

What Hours Do Makeup Artists Work?

Rather than give a vague answer, here are some sample schedules for each type of makeup artist.

Brides and Weddings.

Saturday mornings! The great majority of weddings in the United States take place on Saturdays, with the reception in the evening, the wedding ceremony in the afternoon, and the application of makeup in early to mid-morning. As with all makeup job, it's VERY important that the MUA show up on time, because brides usually have a tight schedule from the moment they wake up to moment they're getting down on the dance floor.

Three things to keep in mind:

  • There are also a ton of weddings on Fridays and Sundays, so if you become a bridal MUA, you can expect a lot of work on those days, as well.
  • Because reception halls tend to cost less on holiday weekends, there are a lot of weddings on Memorial Day, the 4th of July, and Labor Day.
  • Weddings are seasonal. Most of the weddings in the U.S. take place between early May and late September, so business might slow down a bit on the off season .

Of all the careers in makeup, wedding MUAs enjoy a pretty reliable work schedule, and some bridal makeup artists make a VERY good living .

Fashion and Photo Shoots.

These tend to be a little more random, with tougher hours. If a photographer or director needs a night scene, you may finding yourself working long hours!

The work hours vary widely, and they depend on a ton of different factors. If the shoot is outdoors and the director / photographer wants natural light, you'll probably work from 8am to 4 or 5pm; if it's a night-time shot it's not uncommon to start with at 5pm or 6pm and work through the night. If the shoot is indoors and the photographer / director can control the lighting, you'll work whenever the shooting schedule permits.

As for fashion events, they tend to take place at night, so if it's a live fashion show or a runway event, you'll probably work from the afternoon well into the evening for as many days as the event takes place . 

It's worth noting that advertising shoots for commercials *can* have more typical work hours, where you'll work from 8am to 5pm or so.

TV and Film.

The makeup artist work schedules for TV and film varies a LOT. The business people who make movies and TV shows want to finish filming as quickly as possible, because filming is EXPENSIVE. Any given movie or TV show requires dozens if not hundreds of cast members and crew, and they're all getting paid. So producers want to finish shoots ASAP, and that means long hours. It's not uncommon for shoots to take place from sun-up to sun-down. There are plenty of breaks in between, but shoots can last a while.

On the plus side, makeup artist work environment on TV and film sets can be pretty exciting, and pretty glamorous!

This is a little different from TV and film, because most theatrical performances take place in the evening, with the exception of Saturdays and Sundays, where actors are usually required to put on two shows for audiences (one in the afternoon and one at night). You can count on less busy weekdays, and longer hours on the weekends, from early morning to late night.

Makeup Counters at Local Beauty Shops.

Finally, a makeup artist job with regular hours! These MUAs tend to work store hours, with most counter MUAs working six- or seven-hour shifts starting around 11am or noon. These are great jobs if you're just starting out and gaining experience, and if you don't have the option of traveling around or keeping random hours.

Early Mornings and Long Hours.

As a general rule, all the jobs in the arts and beauty industry have long hours. Nine-to-five jobs happen for makeup artists---MUAs who work in the corporate world for makeup companies tend to have those kind of hours---but they're not common for MUAs outside of the "business world." TV and film shoots tend to have VERY early mornings. TV in particular. It's not uncommon for actors and MUAs to get up at 4am or 5am to get ready for a scene. That can be rough.

But you know what? That's part of the fun, and part of the adventure, of being a makeup artist. The 9-to-5 life gets boring. For most makeup artists, having unconventional hours keeps things fresh and exciting! 

Do Makeup Artists Make Their Own Work Schedules?

You've probably heard it said that most MUAs---particularly freelance MUAs---make their own schedules. That's kind of true. Most makeup artists go where the work is, and are not able to dictate the hours that they want to work. HOWEVER, there are a few makeup artists that can do that, and usually, they're the ones who offer private lessons. Those MUAs have a little more freedom to schedule their work schedule, whereas other MUAs---particularly those who work for agencies or in fashion/film/bridal---have to be where the clients are, and at the time the clients dictate.

That's not the worst thing in the world. Most working people aren't able to create our own schedules! : )

This is Lunacy and I'm Not Sure It's for Me

If you're a little disheartened at the thought of working crazy hours, that's totally fine! It's not for everyone, and there are plenty of areas of the beauty industry that keep better hours. The Do’s of Makeup in The Workplace

Makeup. It’s blush, lipstick, concealer, mascara, foundation, and so many other products. It’s used by many people every single day. Often, it takes years of mastering what looks good on your own face and takes even longer to learn the right techniques. It’s a form of art, painting, and restructuring the face, becoming another version of yourself. It’s self-expression that not a single person can tell you how to wear it, except your boss. Maybe you have found yourself at a job that contractually requires you to wear makeup. Whether that’s the case or not, if you’re struggling to figure out how to wear your makeup to work, this guide will help you learn ways to do so.

No one can tell you what you can and can’t do with your appearance in everyday life. However, the workplace is a different story. There’s always a dress code policy at work, whether it is business casual, casual, formal, etc. Adhering to the policy is a part of being a professional.  Professionalism is defined as the behavior, attitude, and general conduct of a person who works in a business environment. This means that the way that you look matters to the company, since you are representing them .  Unless otherwise laid out in your contract, what is often left unsaid is how to wear your makeup. How do you maintain professionalism while feeling and looking your best? 

Don’t Feel Obligated

By no means does this mean you should feel obligated to wear makeup or suddenly start to wear makeup to make yourself seem more professional. Instead, it should inform or inspire you on how to wear makeup in the workplace, if you choose to.  Think about how you apply your everyday makeup. You wouldn’t want to look or feel like anyone but yourself at work. If you have put a wing eyeliner on every day since middle school, don’t stop yourself from feeling like you. 

Keep It Simple!

Enhance your features in a way that makes you feel confident and comfortable. This could mean applying blush so that it compliments your bone structure, on the apples of your cheeks, or higher up on the cheekbone. Consider skipping contour powder or crème all together and use a bronzer instead. You will get a beautiful warm glow and still maintain shadows and depth in the face without creating harsh features. Black can also look harsh in contrast to a soft face application. To rival this, use brown eyeliners and mascaras to emphasize the eyes but in a way that keeps the look cohesive. 

Be Creative

These tips are for more for an office and a general rule of thumb. However, if you are in a more creative field and enjoy exploring with makeup, you may want to consider deviating from this guide.  Say you work in theatre, art, or interior design? Consider something that shows off your skill and personality like a pop of color for eyeshadow or a bold lipstick. This says that you’re a true creative and not afraid of making bold choices.

Work at Night

Don’t get lost in the darkness and try to make yourself noticeable. Try a smokey eye with some eyeliner, this will make your eyes pop in contrast to the darkness of the makeup. Making your eyes more noticeable will help with client and co-worker eye contact, aiding you with effective communication during work hours. Maybe add some highlight to the cheekbones for good measure so that when the light hits your face, you’re the employee that stands out. 


If you want to look both creative and organized, try matching your makeup with your outfit. Say you’re wearing a pink top with a brown pant, use a pink eyeshadow that coordinates and a brown for definition in the crease of your eyelid for both definition and cohesiveness. The same can go for lipsticks and blushes, you want to pick something that has the same undertones as your clothes. Cool tones, warm tones, earth tones, neon, whatever it may be, match it! 

Look to Others

If you have a fear of completely overdoing it or standing out from other people in the office space, observe your co-workers before the first day. See what kind of choices are being made. Maybe the receptionist is wearing red lipstick, perhaps the CEO is only wearing mascara. Scope out the place and decide what would be most comfortable for you. 

Video Conferencing

During these unprecedented times with the COVID-19 pandemic, working from home has become common, and communication is often done through email, phone calls, Zoom, WebEx, Skype, and so on . Though your face isn’t seen using some of these mediums, consider putting on makeup for the ones you do. Sometimes, makeup can make you feel more put together and confident in your work. A lot of these video conferencing applications do not have high resolution, and your features may get lost. Wearing a bright lipstick and contouring the face can bring out the features your co-workers can recognize. 

Style and Expression

In the end, everyone has their own makeup style, they developed in when they started wearing it. Whether it be always wearing black eyeliner on their waterline or overlining their lips with lip liner, everyone has their signature look. It doesn’t matter whether or not you wear makeup to work or not, as long as you feel like your authentic self and have confidence in the way that you look. This is how you are presenting yourself as a member of a company express yourself and show who you are to the people that matter. 

Remember that no one is allowed to have an opinion on how you look and tell you what is appropriate or inappropriate as long as you are following the guidelines set in place. Employers can legally require you to wear makeup as part of their dress code and grooming standards, though this is workplace sex discrimination, you could get fired if you refused.

Are you trying to figure out which type of working environment you would thrive in? Choosing the right type of job and career path are very important decisions; however, it is also important to find the general working environment that is likely to be best for you.

These days, many employees have a certain amount of say in where and even when they work. Therefore, it is important to take the time to figure out what your working style is and where you would be most productive. 

So, let’s take a look at some of the  most common types of work environments .

The physical space 

Indoors or outdoors, the company culture, safety protocols, the working hours , social interactions , performance feedback protocols, traditional, open plan offices , competitive, collaborative, hot desking , read the job description carefully, do your research, contact current and former employees, visit the company, ask questions during the interview, read through the contract carefully, talk with the human resources department, want to create the perfect work environment, types of work environments – final thoughts , what makes up a work environment.

The work environment is composed of a wide range of both physical and non-physical elements. When deciding on the best environment for you, it is important to take all of these elements into account. Here are the most significant ones that make up the work environment. 

The size of the area you work in can make a big difference to your peace of mind. Some people are perfectly happy working in a tiny cubicle, while others prefer open-plan offices. Alternatively, you may find that you need the privacy of your own  office  to be able to focus properly. 

While some people love the comfort of an office, other people hate working indoors. In some cases, the work may involve working indoors in a large factory or outside on a construction site. Other jobs involve a combination of indoor and outdoor environments as well as a certain amount of travel.

This includes all the equipment and furniture that is necessary to do the work, such as desks and computers. Some companies provide extra facilities that improve the quality of life for their employees. These can include coffee machines, gardens to unwind in, on-site fitness areas, and comfortable seating. 

While this can be difficult to define, it normally relates to the company’s values and the overall atmosphere. The company culture dictates the way that employees are expected to behave and the company’s priorities. Insights into the culture of a company can be seen in its mission and vision statements.

Some companies put the highest emphasis on personal goals and excellence. While the atmosphere in these companies can be very productive, employees tend to be quite isolated. Conversely, the atmosphere in companies that value collaboration tends to be much more vibrant and enjoyable.

Safety protocols

Every company has certain safety protocols in place that all employees are expected to follow. In high-risk environments like construction sites and factories, these safety protocols are usually strictly enforced. Safety protocols can dictate the clothing that employees have to wear, their behavior, and their general approach to work.

While traditional office hours are from nine to five, many companies offer employees flexible shifts to accommodate their personal lives. Some companies may offer employees the chance to start earlier or later and finish earlier or later, depending on their needs. 

These days, many companies support  remote working  and flexi-time, which can make some employees more productive. The opportunity for overtime can also be ideal for employees who want to earn a higher salary.

Social interactions 

The rules dictating social interaction and the way they are enforced can have  a big impact on the work environment . In some companies, employees are encouraged to work closely together and act as a family. These environments can be  very friendly and positive  and can lead to enhanced productivity.

However, in some companies, employees are discouraged from talking to each other and even penalized for it. While this is established to drive higher productivity, it can actually have the opposite effect. Employees who are not allowed to interact for several hours at a time can start to feel unhappy and even depressed. This can have  a negative impact on the work environment , and work can suffer as a result.

If you have your sights set on advancing through a company, this can be a very important element. Some companies constantly evaluate the work and progress of their employees. They then use the information to provide periodic feedback and provide either praise or reprimands.

Performance feedback protocols help companies to realize optimum productivity and provide extra training to employees who need it. Some employees thrive on regular feedback and use it as an incentive to strive harder. However, some people find this system oppressive and demeaning, and it may reduce their productivity.

Types of Work Environments

When you are applying for a job, you need to consider the work environment carefully. After all, you will be spending a lot of time each week in this environment. Here are the most common environments that are likely to be found in different types of workplaces. 


This  conventional work environment  tends to be very conservative, formal, and inflexible. Most employees will work from nine to five and take breaks at a set time. There are strict rules dictating employee dress code, expected goals and targets, and the way employees are expected to behave.

Some people crave structure and perform well in traditional work environments. However, some people prefer flexibility and find this type of work environment to be too rigid and even oppressive.

This type of work environment offers a much more modern and flexible style of work and interaction. Instead of being sealed inside individual offices or cubicles, employees are able to interact more easily. The  open plan  of this environment allows employees to see each other and communicate more easily.

Many employees find that this type of work environment is friendlier and encourages collaboration. However, other people can find that this environment makes it too easy to become distracted. People who prefer to simply focus on their work may find this environment to be less than ideal. 


This type of work environment  gives employees more freedom to choose how and when they work . Employees can choose their work schedules and even choose to work remotely if they wish. As long as employees complete set amounts of work and meet goals, they are given much more autonomy.

Many employees find that they are much more productive if they are permitted to take a flexible approach to work. They are able to choose when to take breaks and can work when they are feeling the most productive. However, other employees crave structure and find that they become too easily distracted without strict working however and enforcement.

This work environment is popular among sales and marketing teams in both offices and retail stores. Employees are given strict targets and goals to meet every day and are rewarded for meeting them. There are often financial rewards for meeting goals, while the highest performing employee receives additional rewards.

The basic concept of the competitive work environment is that it encourages each employee to work at the optimum level. This can work well for people who have a strong competitive streak and are motivated by money. However, other people find this type of environment to be very stressful and lead to a lack of motivation.


Many people need a  creative work environment  in order to thrive. A creative environment tends to be less structured and encourages employees to express themselves. The work hours are often flexible, and employees are given time and space to become inspired.

Examples of creative environments include the theatre, dance studios, and artists’ studios. In many cases, employees who choose a creative work environment are encouraged to collaborate. The main focus is on the creative output, and employees are actively encouraged to share knowledge and ideas. 

This is another type of working environment that is focused on the employees. A collaborative environment is ideal for anyone who needs social interaction in order to flourish. Employees are encouraged to work together to solve complex problems and work on different projects.

However, it is essential to have excellent social skills to succeed in a collaborative environment. You need to be skilled at conflict management and be able to assert yourself. While some people love the sense of teamwork and comradery, others find this work environment to be too distracting.

This type of work environment has become very popular in recent years and is designed to save companies money. Instead of assigning a single desk or cubicle to certain employees, each cubicle or desk is available to any employee. This gives employees the freedom to choose a different desk on every shift if they wish.

The advantage of  hot desking  is that it encourages collaboration. Teams who are working together on certain projects can choose desks and cubicles that are close together. They can then move to different parts of the office when they change projects and teams.

Some employees enjoy being able to sit in different parts of the office on different days. However, some employees find the uncertainty of not having their own desk too stressful. It prevents employees from settling into an area of the office and placing personal items on their desk.

Read the job description carefully

The first step is searching the job description for any mention of the work environment. The typical daily tasks will give you a clue to the setting of the work and the company culture. Pay attention to any mention of travel and the set schedule and working hours.

Check out the company’s website and social media presence for indications of the company culture. Things to focus on include team building activities and training programs. Also, take a look at the company’s values and make sure they are in line with your own values and goals. 

Linked In  is a great place to connect with people who work at the company. This networking site allows you to search for both current and previous employees. They may well be willing to give you honest answers to questions about the work environment that can prove to be very valuable.

Visit the company

If you have an interview at a particular company, it is best to arrive at least thirty minutes early. You can use the extra time to check out the area where you would be working. Pay close attention to the overall atmosphere in the working area and how content employees appear to be. 

The end of the interview is the perfect time to ask insightful questions about the work environment. The questions you ask will show the interviewer that you are genuinely interested in the job. However, it is best to limit yourself to a maximum of five brief questions to help you understand the work environment.

Once you have received a job offer, you should be given a contract to review. You need to read the contract carefully and make sure that it meets your expectations. The set working hours should be clearly outlined as well as the salary, job requirements, and regulations.

Talk with the Human Resources department

It can be difficult to be candid about your preferred style of working in the interview. However, the human resources department can be a good source of information. You can enquire about the opportunity for working remotely, flexible working hours, and other elements you are interested in.

Imagine your ideal workplace environment. 

It could have an inviting physical space, a relaxed atmosphere, or friendly chatter from desk to desk. For people working online, it could be a rapid response to a Slack query or an enthusiastic greeting when you log into a Zoom meeting. No matter the environment, you feel you’re in a place where you can thrive.

A toxic work environment might give you the opposite feeling. Some organizations create a company culture focused solely on productivity and success, assuming a high-pressure, results-focused environment will drive profitability. But it can leave you feeling stressed, unappreciated, and burnt out . 

Fostering a healthy work environment improves workplace productivity , employee satisfaction , and other positive outcomes that benefit both the organization and its workers. 

Here are some ideas for workplace improvements to create an overall company culture where colleagues at all levels feel valued.

A work environment is a space — physical and emotional — in which employees perform their daily tasks. It’s a combination of three vital components:

Physical environment: This covers the layout and amenities of an in-person office, including items like desk space, lighting, and location. For remote workers, physical environment refers to software, tools, and equipment.

Working conditions: These are the terms under which an employee agrees to do their job, like compensation and benefits , reporting structure, and safety regulations. 

Company culture: Culture describes how an organization functions on a social level. Some aspects are more formal, like a company’s mission statement or an open communication policy. Others, such as office politics , are unsanctioned but still influential. 

Combined, these components create a workplace environment, which affects every employee’s workflow and mood. Research shows that 35% of job seekers would decline the perfect role if they didn’t connect with company culture , proving just how important a positive environment is. But a healthy workplace goes beyond a company’s ability to attract talent. 


A positive workplace environment can:

Improve staff retention: Employees are seven times more likely to stay with a company with a positive workplace culture .

Boost innovation: Effective work motivation in a constructive environment drives innovation and creative problem-solving .

Increase productivity: Studies show that happy workers are 13% more productive on the job. 

Reduce expenses: A positive workplace can minimize stress and burnout, reducing an organization’s healthcare expenditures by around 50% .

Minimalize absenteeism: Nearly 12 unplanned days off per year stem from poor employee mental health , and a supportive environment can lessen that effect.

Improved reputation: Companies known for taking care of their employees experience 100% more applicants for open positions , thanks to positive public perception.

According to John L. Holland’s Theory of Career Choice , industries attract workers who share basic personality traits. Knowing your team’s personalities — their shared characteristics, values, and preferences — will help you create an office atmosphere that works for most people.

Here’s a list of Holland’s six environments to use as a guide. Keep in mind that no environment fits these types perfectly. You can also consider a hybrid of a few different styles if that better meets your team’s needs.

1. Realistic

Great for: Hands-on kinesthetic workers

Industry: Engineering, maintenance, construction, farming

Realistic workers thrive in interactive workplaces with a focus on hard skills. These employees are typically practical, task-oriented, and hands-on. A realistic workspace is regimented, with clear expectations and the necessary tools to do their jobs.

2. Investigative

Great for: Researchers or problem-solvers

Industry: Healthcare, technology, engineering

Investigative environments require research, critical thinking , and experimentation, like labs and innovative tech companies. Curious thinkers benefit from this open and collaborative environment where they can actively discuss solutions and challenge each other’s reasoning.

3. Artistic

Great for: Creatives

Industry: Advertising, design, creative arts

An artistic work environment nurtures people who thrive on innovation, experimentation, and personal expression. Workers need an open, flexible environment that allows them to work collaboratively or individually at their own pace, providing structure only when necessary.

Great for: Collaborative workers

Industry: Education, nursing, social service, consulting

Workers in these environments are people-oriented, often exhibiting excellent interpersonal skills and high levels of empathy . People in these jobs experience regular social interactions and emotional engagement.

These conditions often involve workplace stressors , like de-escalation and severe medical emergencies, so it’s essential to create an environment that supports employee mental health.


5. Enterprising

Great for: Goal-oriented workers

Industry: Real estate, sales, politics

This work environment has a competitive component. Making sales, creating strategic plans, and debating work-related issues take center stage. The corporate culture should focus on communication and teamwork to help everyone reach their goals in a healthy way.

6. Conventional

Great for: Traditionalists

Industry: Finance, administration

This traditional environment appeals to organized people who enjoy routine. There’s a clear order and dependability to the workday, and employees won’t encounter many surprises in the office. These jobs often involve data collection and organization.

How to interpret Holland’s environments

Keep in mind that not every workplace will fit into one of Holland’s vocational environments, and his theories may not apply to independent workers. While each environment is not inherently harmful, any of them can become a hostile work environment if you use unhealthy motivation techniques to get the job done, negating your efforts to create a positive workplace.

Employees work best in positive environments, and these come in all shapes and sizes. Some employees find a social atmosphere invigorating, while others might find a quiet, zen-like environment more effective.

A reward-based carrot-and-stick method might boost productivity for one group, whereas others might prefer a more cooperative model. 

Get to know your team, and learn their preferences. You can collaborate with them to find the correct balance and foster a positive environment that works for the group.

Researching different types of work environments can help you narrow down which one will most benefit your team, but that’s only part of the job.

Each industry attracts its own type of worker, so getting to know the individual needs of your teammates can help identify common denominators. From those consultations, you can start developing a plan that balances employee well-being and business priorities. 

Be flexible and remember that not every environment will work perfectly for everyone. Your goal is to create the best corporate culture possible. To do so means understanding that your teammates are human beings, not collections of characteristics. Share your plans and solicit their input.

Your employees are most familiar with what produces their best work and can provide valuable insight. Here are more tips for creating a happy, healthy, and successful atmosphere:

1. Create impactful job descriptions

Start by recruiting people who suit your preexisting culture. A person who loves working alone won’t thrive in a social workplace, so be straightforward about what they can expect.

Write a realistic job title followed by purpose, duties, and responsibilities, and be honest when describing the working conditions, expectations, and compensation.

2. Invest time and money in workplace culture

Fair compensation, office amenities, and paid time off policies are all investments that help create a positive workplace culture. Conduct an employee survey and establish initiatives to nurture a healthier environment based on your team’s input.

If you find that departments feel disconnected from each other, plan a team-building activity that brings them together.


3. Find ways to demonstrate appreciation for a job well done

Demonstrating gratitude in the workplace helps employees feel valued, and organizations achieve more when they have a motivated and engaged workforce.

Showing appreciation can be as simple as sending a thank you email or throwing a pizza party to celebrate the successful completion of a project. You can even establish a formal performance incentive program for additional motivation. If you plan on recognizing an individual’s contributions, discuss it with them first. Not everyone is comfortable receiving public praise, so be respectful of their needs. 

4. Trust your team

Micromanagement has been shown to decrease productivity, whether it comes from a coworker or a manager. You can avoid nitpicking the people around you by being transparent about work requirements and consistent with expectations.

And if you see someone completing a task differently than you, be open and let them use their own methods. Step in when someone clearly needs or asks for support.

5. Keep supportive employees 

A good cultural fit is essential to developing a top-performing team. If a team member’s values, attitude, or process starts to harm the rest of the team, and they don’t make changes based on your feedback, it’s okay to make a complaint or fire them . Difficult coworkers only bring the team down. 

6. Establish flexible work policies

Invest in employee well-being by providing options for varied, compressed, and hybrid work schedules. No work environment works for everyone, but you can create options that do. A flexible schedule and remote work options can improve work-life balance and increase productivity.

7. Maintain paths of open communication

Create open and honest paths of communication with your team. Workplace culture impacts them directly, so ask for their input, whether you want to know how to decorate the office or establish performance targets.

An environment of mutual feedback and communication helps reduce workplace conflicts and improve teamwork.

Creating a welcoming and positive work culture takes trial and error, but avoiding these common mistakes from the beginning can streamline the process. 

1. Working through breaks

You and your team need to recharge your mental batteries to work to the best of your abilities, and you can’t ignore the importance of taking breaks . No matter how busy you get, skipping lunch or break times can lead to burnout, disengagement, and decreased productivity.

Try not to skip breaks or encourage others to do so.

2. Calling out mistakes

Instead of drawing attention to errors and treating them as something to avoid, turn them into learning opportunities. Gently and privately communicate issues, and offer your assistance as needed. Constructive feedback helps everyone feel confident in their abilities and comfortable asking for help.


3. Ignoring employee personalities

Give everyone room to express their individuality in the workplace, as long as it doesn’t take away from their workflow. Incorporating your coworkers' interests and passions into the job lets them know they’re valued holistically and creates a sense of belonging .

If a team member loves organizing social events, give them the opportunity to take the lead for the next holiday party.

According to the Huffington Post, the average person spends over 13 years of their life at work . A few hours a day in a toxic work environment might not seem significant, but over a decade is a long time. Working somewhere that doesn’t suit your needs isn’t worth 13 years of discontent.

That’s one reason why The Great Resignation began. Moving into the post-pandemic age, more and more employees are quitting their jobs, citing cultural reasons for doing so. Studies show that feelings of disrespect, a lack of flexibility, and low pay — all factors based on workplace environment — are leading causes of employee departure .

Supportive and happy work environments do exist, but they take effort to curate and maintain. As a manager, you can contribute by listening to your employees and working to meet their expectations.

And as a team member, you can do the same, collaborating with the people around you and being attentive to their needs. If you see the environment needs improvement, speak up. Your team will thank you.

An ideal workplace environment offers more than just clean and comfortable places to work. A positive company culture includes meaningful rewards, recognition, and opportunities for workers to grow and advance their careers. 

If you want to change your work environment, try starting a conversation about your team’s needs and create concrete ways to improve. Choose one of Holland’s environment types or combine them to build one that works for you.

Making the Most of Make-up Work

Chronic absenteeism—missing at least 1 in 10 school days—correlates with low test scores and other achievement deficits. The fact that these measures can reflect negatively on the school is one motivation for building- or district-wide programs aimed at improving attendance. Classroom teachers, however, have a more personal window into the lives of individual students. We know that the more days a student misses the farther behind he is likely to get—and the harder it might become to engage him. We also know the reason for missing class might not be the student's fault. Family disruptions, transportation difficulties and chronic illness (of the student or a family member) may all contribute to absenteeism.

For all these reasons, it’s important to establish systems and routines that support the whole child and set him up for achievement when he returns. The following suggestions address both classroom management and curriculum strategies that can help.

Classroom management: What do students do when they first come into my classroom?

You may have established a bell ringer or warm-up activity that helps students shift into thinking about your content. When students are accustomed to a self-led routine at the beginning of class, teachers can give individual students attention in the first few minutes. During this pre-established time, absent students can find out what was missed, gather needed materials and be ready to rejoin the class community. Set routines also help students who miss class transition back into learning because they know what to expect when they return.

In addition to the designated warm-up activity, establish the communication system so students can find out what material they missed. This system will look different at different grade levels, and many methods will work. Here are a few to try:

In the elementary classroom:

Mailboxes . Mailboxes or cubbies where students keep their materials are standard in most elementary classrooms. Leaving a half-page note is a way to communicate to an absent student what he missed while he was out. To promote social emotional skills, assign your elementary students a class buddy—one peer who can help out by filling in the blanks when her partner is gone.

You may not always know why a student missed class. A friendly heading on the note expressing that the student was missed helps him transition back into the class community in a positive way, regardless of what may have kept him out of class.

In the middle level classroom:

Class calendar . Use a bulletin board or the back of the door to post a large calendar. Write objectives and assignments on the calendar each day and refer to the calendar when returning to objectives and goals during instruction. Keep learning objectives up for three to four weeks, and include a folder near the calendar for any handouts students might have missed.

In the high school classroom:

Daily class journal . Assign a student in each class to record the date, objectives, activities and any assignments in a class notebook. Keep the notebook in the same location in the classroom. Returning students should know to check the class journal during the bell ringer. Rotate which student writes in the journal each week.

Social media . A social media platform provides another method to communicate missing work with absent students. If your district firewalls allow access to Facebook, you can create a private group for each class and post objectives, activities and assignments daily to that group’s wall. Edmodo is another free online platform that allows teachers to populate calendars, upload documents, track student progress and communicate with families, all in one location.

Curriculum: What is the purpose of the assignment?

Graded assignments provide students an opportunity to independently practice skills and demonstrate their progress toward mastery of objectives. They also allow teachers to collect data about student learning for planning future instruction. Because they are rooted in standards, it should matter to student achievement if an assignment is not completed.

Ask yourself: How do students know the value of class assignments?

Share class goals and objectives with your students and keep them posted in a visible location in your classroom. Point out how assignments are explicitly linked to those goals and objectives, and make it clear that students who complete the assignment by the due date move to the next skill or assignment based on mastery. This reinforces the authentic importance of attendance and of making up work when students miss a day.

Students should also understand the distinction between a due date and a drop-dead due date. Drop-dead due dates are driven by the school calendar and marking periods. Reporting midterm and end-of-term grades is mandatory, and students must complete all required work by these dates. Help students understand that assignments are intentionally built into the quarter or semester to help them work toward previously identified goals and objectives. The desired outcome is to master all class objectives within the marking period. Making this connection allows students to see their learning as cumulative and fosters self-monitoring and awareness—skills that become increasingly important as more and more independence is required of them.

Facilitating and tracking student make-up work can feel like a chore, but incorporating strategies designed to maximize student success serves two important purposes. One, it keeps learning on track and kids moving forward academically. And, two, it makes your classroom an environment that welcomes students back rather than heightens their anxieties about being gone in the first place.

Architecture prof counts the ways UB makes her feel True Blue

Before joining the School of Architecture and Planning’s faculty in 2022,   Daniela Sandler had taught at many different colleges and universities.

But in her estimation, there's no place like UB.

First, there’s Buffalo. In a city with so many layers, Sandler feels she can fully engage in her work as an architectural historian. “I often find things to love and things to learn from,” she says, noting that she’s even fascinated by the 1970s modernism of the North Campus.

Second, there’s UB’s commitment to diversity and inclusion, which lie at the heart of her approach to teaching and learning, and make her feel supported.

Last but not least, she finally gets to share an institutional homebase with her husband, who also teaches at UB.

“We have been together for about 20 years, and we had never had academic jobs in the same place. And we tried — a lot,” Sandler recalls. “UB was the first and only place that actually recognized that families are important, and that for someone to be happy at their workplace, they need to be happy personally, not only professionally.”

Sandler’s scholarly work examines social inequalities in the built environment, spotlighting the ways in which groups and individuals fight for more inclusive cities through the intersection of bottom-up tactics and official policies.

She also serves as the school’s associate dean for inclusive excellence. She says the diverse makeup of the student body at UB enhances those aims in valuable ways.

“It means that the classroom experience, the questions that get asked, the topics that generate discussion, the proposals that students come up with, are also more diverse and provocative,” she says. “I have been teaching for almost 20 years, and yet UB has made the experience fresh again.”

It not only makes the job interesting — it makes it meaningful.

“I really believe, first of all, the mission of education, whatever, wherever it comes from, is to make society better,” Sandler says.

“The idealism, social engagement, and scholarly and creative excellence of my colleagues and students make me proud,” she says. “Their work makes a real positive difference — in Buffalo and around the world.”

The Steinberg Conference Center describes itself as a world-class facility for Wharton's Executive Education program — but multiple current and former employees of the center allege they faced mistreatment and an abusive workplace environment. 

The Center, located at the intersection of 38th and Spruce streets, houses Wharton Executive Education and offers a full-service hotel and dining room for participants to utilize during their programs at Wharton. The Daily Pennsylvanian spoke with former and current hotel employees at the Steinberg Conference Center who alleged their complaints of a toxic workplace have gone unaddressed due to their superior's apparent marriage to a top Penn administrator. 

The employees told the DP they have filed multiple complaints to Penn’s Division of Human Resources , the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission , Teamsters Local 115 , which represents many of the conference center employees, and Aramark , which supplies management for the conference center. All employees said that nothing has come of their complaints and that none of their concerns have been addressed.

The DP obtained the employees’ complaints, emails between employees and Penn HR staff, and disciplinary notices filed against employees by their managers. All five employees that the DP spoke with alleged mismanagement, mistreatment, and harassment at the hands of their superior at the conference center, who they identified as Yanire Shafi. 

Shafi, who is a housekeeping supervisor at the conference center, is the wife of Jalil Shafi , the director of Human Resources in the Office of the Provost, according to employees. All of the employees and ex-employees cited this relationship as an explanation for why action has not been taken against Yanire Shafi.

A Wharton spokesperson declined to comment. Jalil Shafi did not respond to request for comment, while a request for comment from Yanire Shafi was redirected to her manager, Faramarz Vakili, the executive director of operations and maintenance in Penn's Facilities and Real Estate Services division.

“We cannot discuss individual employee issues," Vakili wrote. "Penn employees with concerns have many different resources to assist them. One resource that employees can contact is the Division of Human Resources Staff and Labor Relations to share their concerns."

Ties to a Penn human resources administrator

Yanire Shafi was first hired by the conference center in the early 2000s as a business administrator but transferred to housekeeping as early as 2007, according to one employee. She then became a housekeeping manager around 2011 but then left in 2015. Yanire Shafi was then rehired in the spring of 2022, which is when the allegations of abuse began.

A current housekeeper at the Center, who was granted anonymity due to fear of retaliation, told the DP that they witnessed Yanire Shafi giving certain employees harder workloads and changing their schedules when they complained about their mistreatment.

The employee said that Yanire Shafi was forced out by the Teamsters union for mistreatment when she first left the conference center, but she was rehired later. Teamsters did not respond to request for comment.

“Everybody wonders how she came back," the employee said. "It’s still a puzzle."

The employee added that Yanire Shafi has multiple employees who report back information about their colleagues to her.

“She’s very dismissive of anything you say,” the employee said. 

The employee added they witnessed Yanire Shafi increasing other employees' workloads and issuing disciplinary notices over small disputes that normally would not merit them. She also said Yanire Shafi forced out Ruthenia Thompson, a conference center employee of 26 years who now works in Huntsman Hall.

Because this employee said that she has not directly been affected by Yanire Shafi’s actions, she has not filed a complaint with Penn or Aramark, but she has submitted an anonymous complaint to the Teamsters 115 Local Union.

“We are not slaves,” the employee said. “I feel like [Yanire Shafi] is treating us like some slaves there.” 

The employee alleged that the reason Yanire Shafi is still employed by Penn is because her husband is a senior HR administrator.

“Her husband is a director at Penn, so that’s the only way she could be doing these things,” they said. “There’s no way else that she could be mistreating people like this and get away with it.”

Another current employee, who was also granted anonymity for fear of retaliation, said that Yanire Shafi cultivates an unprofessional work environment and creates stress in the workplace.

“When she came back, it was even worse than it was the first time she was there. She’s very unprofessional, and she doesn’t relay proper information to the staff,” the employee said. “It’s just nonsensical, and it’s becoming stressful.”

The employee said that Yanire Shafi is also unwilling to listen to the employees.

“When we try to relay that to her what’s best for our job, she doesn’t want to hear that,” the employee said.

Forcing out a 26-year employee

Since being hired in spring 2022, the employee further alleged that Yanire Shafi has caused three employees to either transfer or leave the conference center.

Thompson, the former conference center employee and current Huntsman Hall employee, served as a laundry worker at the conference center, and told the DP that she has had multiple encounters with Yanire Shafi. Thompson worked at the conference center from November 1997 to January 2023.

Thompson alleged that Yanire Shafi gave her disciplinary notices multiple times after speaking up to her about how the supervisor gave certain workers preferential treatment and gossiped about them. She also alleged that Yanire Shafi gave her disciplinary notices when she pointed out that other laundry workers were on their phones during their shifts.

Thompson also said she noticed her workload began to increase when she began to report Yanire Shafi’s actions to Penn HR. She added that near the end of her time at the conference center this January, Yanire Shafi would send people to inspect the rooms Thompson had recently cleaned, which led to a disciplinary notice that prompted her transfer to Huntsman Hall.

The notice filed against Thompson by Yanire Shafi on Jan. 18 alleges that Thompson failed to set the thermostat at the correct temperature, did not properly center a pillow, left a window slightly ajar, and did not clean dust on the top edge of the TV. 

The report states that Thompson’s cleaning was a “failure to meet Steinberg’s basic cleaning standards.”

After the form was filed, Thompson was suspended without pay on Jan. 26, and she did not return to work until Feb. 9 — when she said she was transferred to Huntsman Hall under an arrangement with Penn HR. 

Thompson said that she almost never received disciplinary notices before Yanire Shafi started working there in May 2022. She mentioned that her last “real” write-up was in 2007 or 2008. 

However, in the last year of her employment at the Steinberg Conference Center, once Yanire Shafi began working there, she received six distinct disciplinary notices.

Thompson said she first contacted Aramark and James Bean, Penn’s Facilities and Real Estate Services’ director of labor relations, in June 2022 about these issues and received no response from either party.

She then contacted Jeffrey Rowland, Penn’s Human Resources executive director for staff and labor relations on July 25, 2022, and did not receive a call back after leaving a message.

Thompson then contacted Penn's Staff and Labor Relations office and was transferred to Penn’s Employee Solution Center . After speaking with multiple representatives, she was told that her concerns would be brought back to Staff and Labor Relations.

Thompson said that she did talk to senior staff relations specialist Andrea Boozer, who spoke with her about her concerns on Aug. 22, 2022 and said she would speak to Bean. It is unclear if Bean addressed the concerns. 

During the same summer, Thompson also called Teamsters Local 115 multiple times about the issues but said that her grievances against the disciplinary notices she received from Yanire Shafi were never resolved.

A 'hostile work environment'

Former conference center custodian Jessica Curry started working at the conference center in 2018 and resigned on Oct. 4. She told the DP that Yanire Shafi created a hostile work environment and abused the employees.

“She pretty much made it a hostile work environment, she pretty much abused the workers,” Curry said. “Abused as in overworked, unfair treatment, completely disregarded the union that everybody is a part of.”

For example, Curry said that after attending social events at which she did not feel comfortable interacting with Yanire Shafi, she began declining such invitations, after which she said Yanire Shafi's behavior worsened. 

In a complaint written by Curry that summarizes her grievances, she listed all the times when she experienced Yanire Shafi’s behavior.

On Oct. 5, Curry called the Penn Employee Solution Center alleging that Yanire Shafi showed favoritism to an employee by allowing them to make inappropriate comments about Curry's physical appearance and verbally harass Curry on June 17, calling her “you American" in front of another manager who did not intervene. 

On June 22, after Curry spoke with Yanire Shafi about the employee's actions, Yanrie Shafi said that the other manager denied the employee's actions ever took place and that there is nothing she can do.

Curry also said that on Aug. 7, Yanire Shafi reduced the number of laundry workers from four to three, tripling Curry's workload.

After bringing up these workload issues to Yanire Shafi on Sept. 28, Yanire Shafi dismissed the issues and threatened to take disciplinary action if Curry could not handle the work.

On Oct. 4, Curry resigned after Yanire Shafi threatened to write her another disciplinary notice for allegedly taking an unauthorized break in the laundry room, but Curry said that all the laundry machines were running, so she had no work to do at the time. 

Curry contacted the Penn Employee Solution Center and read off the allegations from her complaint, but never heard back after being told by an agent that someone would be in touch with her. Curry had a phone interview with them on Sept. 29, but they also did not respond. Curry described all the incidents except for one in the document to the EEOC. 

Lack of response to complaints

Curry spoke to a union representative at Teamsters Local 115, but she said that nothing came of the conversation.

Curry said she filed a charge of employment discrimination with the EEOC on July 17 and she spoke with EEOC representatives on the phone on Sept. 29 but nothing came of the call. She said she also reported Yanire Shafi to Aramark on July 17 but said nothing came of this either.

“The only time the union show[s] up is when Yani is disciplining somebody for something,” Curry said.

Former Steinberg Conference Center employee Yalonda Davis, who worked as a laundry custodian and attendant, began working there in February 2019 and left on Nov. 5.

Davis sent a wide-ranging complaint to Penn Employee Solutions about Yanire Shafi’s alleged acts of mistreatment toward her. These included a five-day suspension for Davis after she did not tell a manager that she left early one day after finishing her work, which Davis said was standard practice. She also said she received a disciplinary notice for allegedly sitting around and not doing work, but she said that this would not normally incur disciplinary action.

Davis said that nothing came of this complaint, which was forwarded to Aramark, who told her someone else would follow up and the case was closed.

She said she also sent this complaint to the EEOC.

Davis also sent a grievance to Teamsters Local 115, who elevated the grievance to Penn’s Labor Relations. James Bean, Director of Labor Relations, said the grievance was without merit and was denied.

The EEOC and Aramark said that they cannot comment on individual charges or employee matters. 

"We are prohibited by federal law from commenting on charges (complaints/claims) or even confirming or denying the existence of a charge," the EEOC wrote. "Any written materials or decisions that may result from a charge or any resulting investigation are also confidential by law."

Aramark said that it values feedback and treats "all associates with integrity and respect," encouraging employees with concerns to use the company's anonymous hotline.

Curry said that when people report anything through Penn about Yanire Shafi, "it has to go through her husband."
