In every academic year, Unisa always tests their students by the end of the semester to know their academic performance during and after an examination has been conducted. Within the exam period, students are expected to pass an average mark after their exams have been graded. UNISA requires an average mark of 50% for a pass.

A student “passes” a module when they have received a final mark of 50% and above . A student “passes with distinction” when they obtain a final mark of 75% and above. A student “fails” a module when they have received a final mark of less than 50% and is not eligible for further supplementary assessment opportunities.

Grading System at UNISA:

UNISA follows a standard grading system that determines the pass marks for exams. The university employs a scale of 0 to 100 for each module, where 50 is the minimum pass mark required to progress and earn credits for the course. EXAMINATION DATE AT UNISA ACADEMY

The final dates for the examination will be confirmed later in the year. It is YOUR responsibility to make sure of the final dates. Final dates can be found on the SOL main page https://sol.unisa.ac.za – follow the link to Examination Time Table. The following is the PRELIMINARY date for the exams: 7 June (semester 1) and 5 November (semester 2)

There is NO supplementary examination for students who miss the exams. Students who miss the papers will have to re-enrol for the next course to be able to write the exams at the end of the next semester. However, this is not an automatic procedure, students have to enrol as though they enrol for the first time.

Supplementary Examinations:

In cases where a student falls slightly below the pass mark (between 45 and 49), UNISA offers a lifeline in the form of supplementary examinations. These supplementary exams provide students with a second chance to achieve the required pass mark and successfully complete the module. It is essential to note that not all modules offer supplementary exams, and it is always better to aim for a higher mark initially to avoid the need for additional assessments.

DURATION OF EXAMINATION

The scheduled duration of each paper is 3 hours.

Required documentation to write exams at Unisa Academy

You must please keep the following documentation safely and take it along to the examination venue:

• Registration letter (you will receive this early in the year – it contains your student number as well as the courses that you are enrolled for).
• Examination letter from the Registrar (you should receive a letter, usually in September, from the Examinations Department, confirming your exam dates and venue).

Unisa depends on the public postal system, so it, unfortunately, happens that post that is sent out, do not reach their destinations in time. If you have not received the above documentation by mid-September, it is your responsibility to contact UNISA (you can contact our secretary at [email protected] or (012) 4296089).

You must also take your ID book or Passport along to the examination venue.

How to Calculate Unisa Year Mark

Year-mark and final examination mark

The year-mark contribution towards the final examination mark is calculated as follows:

• 50% of the mark obtained for assignment 01 Plus
• 50% of the mark obtained for assignment 02

If you only submit assignment 01, your year mark will be 50% of the mark obtained for this assignment. This will then be your year mark out of a possible 100%. If, for example, you obtain 80% for assignment 01 and 0% for assignment 02, your year mark will be 40%. Unisa Exam Results 2024

According to university policy, you require a sub-minimum of 40% in the examination before your year mark is taken into consideration. In other words, if you do not obtain at least 40% in the examination, you will automatically fail, and your final mark will be the mark you obtained in the examination.

A final mark of 50% is required to pass this module. This final mark is calculated as follows:

• (10% x of the year mark) + (90% x mark obtained in the examination)

Failing a Module:

Should a student fail to achieve the pass mark of 50 or obtain a supplementary exam opportunity, they will have to re-register for the module and retake it in its entirety. Grading Descriptors

The following statement indicates broadly the meaning of assignment grades for your final work:

95-100 (High Distinction) An assignment graded at or above 95% is clearly superior to the vast majority of work that is normally presented at this level of university study, over a number of years and is already suitable for public presentation, excepting editorial amendment. Grades above 95% are rarely awarded.

85-94 (High Distinction) An assignment graded at this level is, in all but a few respects, outstanding work for university assignments at the year level of the unit; such assignments exceed in at least some respects, the expected level of work for students at this level. Such assignments would, with minor additional work, be suitable for public presentation. Only a few of all students completing a particular assignment will obtain grades above 85%.

75-84 (Distinction) An assignment graded at this level is, on the whole, very good work for university assignments at the year level of the unit; such assignments meet all of the main criteria against which the assignment is being marked and, at the upper percentage range, may show outstanding performance in some respects. A distinction assignment is one that, with substantial additional work, would be suitable for public presentation. Students who receive such grades are doing very well at their studies, noting that consistent results above 75% indicate superior performance to the majority of students in a class.

65-74 (Credit) An assignment graded at this level is creditable and clearly acceptable work for university assignments at the year level of the unit; such assignments meet the main criteria against which the assignment is being marked or meet some criteria very well and not others not so well. Students completing such assignments are doing reasonably well at their studies, especially if their work is consistently at the higher end of the percentage scale. Such assignments would, with limited revision, be capable of achieving a distinction. A 74% average is one sign of the ability to progress to more advanced study.

50-64 (Pass 1/Pass 2 (50-54)) An assignment graded as passing is broadly acceptable for university assignments at the year level of the unit; such assignments meet, to some extent, the main criteria against which the assignment is being marked or meet a few criteria and not others. Students who receive passing grades have a basic grasp of the subject matter and/or are making some effort at the assignment. Such work would require substantial revision to enable it to achieve a distinction.

00-49 (Fail) Such an assignment fails, in major respects, to achieve the minimum standard for university assignments at the year level of the unit and has failed to address some of the main criteria against which the assignment is being marked. Students who receive failing grades are either not grasping the subject matter, or not making a suitable attempt at the assignment or both. Such work is poor and even substantial revision would not enable it to achieve a distinction result.

What happens if I fail a course?

You will fail a course if your final grade is Fail 1 (F1)*, Fail 2 (F2) or Fail (F). Failing a course has some implications that you need to be aware of which might change your enrolment in future semesters.  If you fail a core course, you will need to repeat the course at a later stage. Some core courses run every semester, but others only run in specific study periods, so make a note of it. A core course is a course that is compulsory within an academic program or specialisation which you will need to complete in order to meet the requirements of your degree.  If you fail an elective course, you may choose to repeat the course at a later stage or complete a different course instead.   It is important to understand that if you fail a course and have to take the course again, you will not be able to claim an exemption for any of the assignment components you have completed.   To ensure you succeed in your course, we recommend that you take advantage of all the academic and counselling supports offered by the University.  If you fail the same course for a second time, your record will be identified for Academic Review.       *A Fail 1 grade comprises a mark between 40 and 49. Most courses grant students the opportunity to obtain a Supplementary Pass (SP) by providing a Supplementary Exam or Assignment if your mark is between 45 and 49. If you are granted a Supplementary Exam or Assignment, you will be automatically notified.

If you only submit assignment 01, your overall grade for the year will be calculated as 50% of the mark you receive for this assignment. This will be your year-end score, graded out of a maximum of 100%. For instance, if you score 80% on assignment 01 and 0% on assignment 02, your overall grade for the year will be 40%.

As per the university policy, you must achieve a minimum of 40% in the examination for your year mark to be considered. Simply put, if you score below 40% on the exam, you will fail outright, and your final grade will be based solely on your exam score.

To pass this module, you need a final mark of at least 50%. The final mark is calculated in the following manner: To calculate your final grade, you need to consider two factors: the year mark, which accounts for 10% of your overall grade, and the mark you obtained in the examination, which accounts for the remaining 90%.

How does the UNISA grading system work?

The main objective of grading UNISA (University of South Africa) exams is to evaluate students’ comprehension and mastery of the course content. The use of standardised evaluation methods provides a fair and consistent way to assess students’ academic progress and competency.

The grading system at UNISA works mostly like any other university.

The main grading system looks at your overall performance at the end of every academic year. This grading is considered as the “Class division”.

However,  prior to that, there is the secondary post, which is actually transferred to the main grading to give you your overall performance every academic year or at the end of your qualification study period. 

The grading ranges are arranged in scale, representing your percentage score.

The grading points start from 0 and end at 7, with 0 being the lowest and 7 being the highest. This is translated from the final score you receive on every module in your course.

Finally, these grades are then put together to confirm your class division. This class is synced with the percentage point of your final score to determine your overall performance.
