Here’s a detailed look at each of these parts and the templates on offer.

1. Executive Summary

According to the Journal of the American Pharmacists Association, every 9 of 10 people in the US live within five miles of a community pharmacy. This is a point that pharmacies should play a big role in public health efforts, like providing vaccinations and medicines.

However, in some areas, 8% of counties have roughly half of their residents living over 10 miles from a pharmacy. This presents an opportunity for pharmacy businesses to open shop in those places and serve the community.

Executive Summary

The executive summary serves as a concise overview of the pharmacy business plan, summarizing key points for potential stakeholders. It highlights the pharmacy’s unique value proposition (as we did in the previous paragraph), target market, and revenue projections. The summary also emphasizes the management team’s expertise and the business’s competitive advantage. Investors can grasp the business’s potential and decide whether to buy into the plan based on the specifics outlined.

2. Company Overview

This section presents the pharmacy’s background, history, and legal structure. The company overview highlights its mission, vision, and core values, giving a glimpse into its corporate culture. It details the pharmacy’s location, facilities, and the range of pharmaceutical products and services on offer. This plan never misses critical details like the business’s goals and objectives, and a start-up summary is presented through figures and charts.

Company Overview

The need for the pharmacy is emphasized with a market gap analysis, a study that the business statement also serves to boost. With the base built, the services that the business offers are also documented. These include prescription refills, new prescriptions, mail-order delivery, immunizations, etc.

3. Industry Analysis

The industry analysis delves into the pharmaceutical market, examining factors like the market size, growth trends, and regulatory landscape. It outlines key opportunities and challenges, providing insights into the pharmacy’s potential for success.

This section of the plan begins with a market analysis of the pharmaceutical industry. The analysis is current and considers the influence of the Covid-19 pandemic on the industry. Some figures and charts showcase the pharmaceutical industry as it is, with a look at its rate of growth and the factors that influence it.

Industry Analysis

This segment also addresses the impact of emerging technologies and innovations in the healthcare sector. Although the report begins with insights into global trends, we focus on insights relevant to the US, such as pharmacy retail stores and pharma spending.

Let us review the first PowerPoint Presentation chosen to aid this pharmacy business plan.

What Is a Business Plan?

A business plan provides a snapshot of your pharmaceutical business as it stands today, and lays out your growth plan for the next five years. It explains your business goals and your strategies for reaching them. It also includes market research to support your plans.

Why You Need a Business Plan

If you’re looking to start a pharmaceutical business or grow your existing company, you need a business plan. A business plan will help you raise funding, if needed, and plan out the growth of your pharmaceutical company to improve your chances of success. Your business plan is a living document that should be updated annually as your company grows and changes.

Sources of Funding for Pharmaceutical Businesses

With regards to funding, the main sources of funding for a pharmaceutical business are personal savings, credit cards, bank loans, and angel investors. When it comes to bank loans, banks will want to review your business plan and gain confidence that you will be able to repay your loan and interest. To acquire this confidence, the loan officer will not only want to ensure that your financials are reasonable, but they will also want to see a professional plan. Such a plan will give them the confidence that you can successfully and professionally operate a business. Personal savings and bank loans are the most common funding paths for pharmaceutical businesses.

How to write a business plan for a pharmaceutical company.

If you want to start a pharmaceutical company or expand your current one, you need a business plan. The guide below details the necessary information for how to write each essential component of your pharmaceutical business plan.

Executive Summary

Your executive summary provides an introduction to your business plan, but it is normally the last section you write because it provides a summary of each key section of your plan.

The goal of your executive summary is to quickly engage the reader. Explain to them the kind of pharmaceutical business you are running and the status. For example, are you a startup, do you have a company that you would like to grow, or are you operating pharmaceutical companies in multiple markets?

Next, provide an overview of each of the subsequent sections of your plan.

  • Give a brief overview of the pharmaceutical industry.
  • Discuss the type of pharmaceutical business you are operating.
  • Detail your direct competitors. Give an overview of your target customers.
  • Provide a snapshot of your marketing strategy. Identify the key members of your team.
  • Offer an overview of your financial plan.

Company Overview

In your company overview, you will detail the type of pharmaceutical company you are operating.

For example, you might specialize in one of the following types of pharmaceutical businesses:

  • Generic Pharmaceutical Manufacturing : this type of pharmaceutical business develops prescription or over-the-counter drugs products that do not have patent protection.
  • Vitamin & Supplement Manufacturing: this type of pharmaceutical company primarily develops products that contain ingredients intended to supplement the diet.
  • Brand Name Pharmaceutical Manufacturing: this type of pharmaceutical business engages in significant research and development of patent-protected prescription and over-the-counter medications.

In addition to explaining the type of pharmaceutical business you will operate, the company overview needs to provide background on the business.

Include answers to questions such as:

  • When and why did you start the business?
  • What milestones have you achieved to date? Milestones could include the number of patents awarded, the extent of your product portfolio, reaching X number of distributors under contract, etc.
  • Your legal business Are you incorporated as an S-Corp? An LLC? A sole proprietorship? Explain your legal structure here.

Industry Analysis

In your industry or market analysis, you need to provide an overview of the pharmaceutical industry.

While this may seem unnecessary, it serves multiple purposes.

First, researching the pharmaceutical industry educates you. It helps you understand the market in which you are operating.

Secondly, market research can improve your marketing strategy, particularly if your analysis identifies market trends.

The third reason is to prove to readers that you are an expert in your industry. By conducting the research and presenting it in your plan, you achieve just that.

The following questions should be answered in the industry analysis section:

  • How big is the pharmaceutical industry (in dollars)?
  • Is the market declining or increasing?
  • Who are the key competitors in the market?
  • Who are the key suppliers in the market?
  • What trends are affecting the industry?
  • What is the industry’s growth forecast over the next 5 – 10 years?
  • What is the relevant market size? That is, how big is the potential target market for your pharmaceutical company? You can extrapolate such a figure by assessing the size of the market in the entire country and then applying that figure to your local population.

Customer Analysis

The customer analysis section of your business plan must detail the customers you serve and/or expect to serve.

The following are examples of customer segments: healthcare providers, chain pharmacies, independent retailers, and consumers.

As you can imagine, the customer segment(s) you choose will have a great impact on the type of pharmaceutical business you operate. Clearly, individuals would respond to different marketing promotions than hospitals, for example.

Try to break out your target customers in terms of their demographic and psychographic profiles. With regards to demographics, including a discussion of the ages, genders, locations, and income levels of the potential customers you seek to serve.

Psychographic profiles explain the wants and needs of your target customers. The more you can recognize and define these needs, the better you will do in attracting and retaining your customers.

Competitive Analysis

Your competitive analysis should identify the indirect and direct competitors your business faces and then focus on the latter.

Direct competitors are other pharmaceutical businesses.

Indirect competitors are other options that customers have to purchase from that aren’t directly competing with your product or service. This includes imported alternatives, herbal remedies, or customers’ nutritional self-care. You need to mention such competition as well.

For each such competitor, provide an overview of their business and document their strengths and weaknesses. Unless you once worked at your competitors’ businesses, it will be impossible to know everything about them. But you should be able to find out key things about them such as

  • What types of products do they manufacture?
  • What are their research and development capabilities?
  • What is their pricing (premium, low, etc.)?
  • What are they good at?
  • What are their weaknesses?

With regards to the last two questions, think about your answers from the customers’ perspective. And don’t be afraid to ask your competitors’ customers what they like most and least about them.

The final part of your competitive analysis section is to document your areas of competitive advantage. For example:

  • Will you provide product development?
  • Will you offer products or services that your competition doesn’t?
  • Will you provide better customer service?
  • Will you offer better pricing?

Think about ways you will outperform your competition and document them in this section of your plan.

Marketing Plan

Traditionally, a marketing plan includes the four P’s: Product, Price, Place, and Promotion. For a pharmaceutical company, your marketing strategy should include the following:

Product : In the product section, you should reiterate the type of pharmaceutical business that you documented in your company overview. Then, detail the specific products or services you will be offering. For example, will you manufacture patent-protected prescription medications, or a range of vitamins?

Price : Document the prices you will offer and how they compare to your competitors. Essentially in the product and price sub-sections of your plan, you are presenting the products and/or services you offer and their prices.

Place : Place refers to the site of your pharmaceutical business. Document where your company is situated and mention how the site will impact your success. For example, is your pharmaceutical company located in an industrial district, near a major medical and/or scientific hub, or near input markets? Discuss how your site might be the ideal location for your customers.

Promotions : The final part of your pharmaceutical marketing plan is where you will document how you will drive potential customers to your location(s). The following are some promotional methods you might consider:

  • Advertise in local papers, radio stations and/or magazines
  • Advertise in trade publications
  • Reach out to websites
  • Distribute flyers
  • Engage in email marketing
  • Advertise on social media platforms
  • Improve the SEO (search engine optimization) on your website for targeted keywords

Operations Plan

While the earlier sections of your business plan explained your goals, your operations plan describes how you will meet them. Your operations plan should have two distinct sections as follows.

Everyday short-term processes include all of the tasks involved in running your pharmaceutical company, including meeting with potential customers, creating and distributing product information, developing and manufacturing products, etc.

Long-term goals are the milestones you hope to achieve. These could include the dates when you expect to produce your Xth product, or when you hope to reach $X in revenue. It could also be when you expect to expand your pharmaceutical business to a new city.

Management Team

To demonstrate your pharmaceutical company’s potential to succeed, a strong management team is essential. Highlight your key players’ backgrounds, emphasizing those skills and experiences that prove their ability to grow a company.

Ideally, you and/or your team members have direct experience in managing pharmaceutical businesses. If so, highlight this experience and expertise. But also highlight any experience that you think will help your business succeed.

If your team is lacking, consider assembling an advisory board. An advisory board would include 2 to 8 individuals who would act as mentors to your business. They would help answer questions and provide strategic guidance. If needed, look for advisory board members with experience in managing a pharmaceutical business or successfully running a R&D company.

Financial Plan

Your financial plan should include your 5-year financial statement broken out both monthly or quarterly for the first year and then annually. Your financial statements include your income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow statements.

Income Statement

An income statement is more commonly called a Profit and Loss statement or P&L. It shows your revenue and then subtracts your costs to show whether you turned a profit or not.

In developing your income statement, you need to devise assumptions including your sales projections. For example, will you manufacture a line of general sales products, or will you specialize in manufacturing controlled drugs? And will sales grow by 2% or 10% per year? As you can imagine, your choice of assumptions will greatly impact the financial forecasts for your business. As much as possible, conduct research to try to root your assumptions in reality.

Balance Sheets

Balance sheets show your assets and liabilities. While balance sheets can include much information, try to simplify them to the key items you need to know about. For instance, if you spend $50,000 on building out your pharmaceutical company, this will not give you immediate profits. Rather it is an asset that will hopefully help you generate profits for years to come. Likewise, if a lender writes you a check for $50,000, you don’t need to pay it back immediately. Rather, that is a liability you will pay back over time.

Cash Flow Statement

Your cash flow statement will help determine how much money you need to start or grow your business, and ensure you never run out of money. What most entrepreneurs and business owners don’t realize is that you can turn a profit but run out of money and go bankrupt.

When creating your Income Statement and Balance Sheets be sure to include several of the key costs needed in starting or growing a pharmaceutical company:

  • Cost of equipment and supplies
  • Payroll or salaries paid to staff
  • Business insurance
  • Other start-up expenses (if you’re a new business) like legal expenses, permits, computer software, and equipment

Attach your full financial projections in the appendix of your plan along with any supporting documents that make your plan more compelling. For example, you might include your facility blueprint or a list of products you manufacture.

Writing a business plan for your pharmaceutical business is a worthwhile endeavor. If you follow the template above, by the time you are done, you will truly be an expert. You will understand the pharmaceutical company industry, your competition, and your customers. You will develop a marketing strategy and will understand what it takes to launch and grow a successful pharmaceutical company.

  • What are the products and/or services that I offer?
  • Why am I offering these particular products and/or services?
  • How do I differentiate myself from competitors with similar offerings?
  • How will I market my products and services?

You may want to do a comparison of your business plan against those of other competitors in the area, or even with online reviews. This way, you can find out what people like about them and what they don’t like, so that you can either improve upon their offerings or avoid doing so altogether.

3. Build a Creative Marketing Stratgey.

If you don't have a marketing plan for your retail pharmacy business, it's time to write one. Your marketing plan should be part of your business plan and be a roadmap to your goals.

A good marketing plan for your retail pharmacy business includes the following elements:

Target market

  • Who is your target market?
  • What do these customers have in common?
  • How many of them are there?

  • Where did they come from (i.e., referrals)?
  • How can their experience with your retail pharmacy business help make them repeat customers, consumers, visitors, subscribers, or advocates for other people in their network or industry who might also benefit from using this service, product, or brand?

Product or service description

  • How does it work, what features does it have, and what are its benefits?
  • Can anyone use this product or service regardless of age or gender?
  • Can anyone visually see themselves using this product or service?
  • How will they feel when they do so? If so, how long will the feeling last after purchasing (or trying) the product/service for the first time?

Competitive analysis

  • Which companies are competing with yours today (and why)?
  • Which ones may enter into competition with yours tomorrow if they find out about it now through word-of-mouth advertising; social media networks; friends' recommendations; etc.)
  • What specific advantages does each competitor offer over yours currently?

Marketing channels

  • Which marketing channel do you intend to leverage to attract new customers?
  • What is your estimated marketing budget needed?
  • What is the projected cost to acquire a new customer?
  • How many of your customers do you instead will return?

Next, you'll need to build your operational plan. This section describes the type of business you'll be running, and includes the steps involved in your operations.

In it, you should list:

  • The equipment and facilities needed
  • Who will be involved in the business (employees, contractors)
  • Financial requirements for each step
  • Milestones & KPIs
  • Location of your business
  • Zoning & permits required for the business

What equipment, supplies, or permits are needed to run a retail pharmacy business?

  • Medical Supplies and Equipment
  • Computers and Point of Sale System
  • Pharmacy Software
  • Licensing and Permits from State & Federal Agencies
  • Business Licensing
  • Safety Supplies
  • Adequate Insurance Coverage

5. Management & Organization of Your Retail Pharmacy Business.

The second part of your retail pharmacy business plan is to develop a management and organization section.

This section will cover all of the following:

  • How many employees you need in order to run your retail pharmacy business. This should include the roles they will play (for example, one person may be responsible for managing administrative duties while another might be in charge of customer service).
  • The structure of your management team. The higher-ups like yourself should be able to delegate tasks through lower-level managers who are directly responsible for their given department (inventory and sales, etc.).
  • How you’re going to make sure that everyone on board is doing their job well. You’ll want check-ins with employees regularly so they have time to ask questions or voice concerns if needed; this also gives you time to offer support where necessary while staying informed on how things are going within individual departments too!

6. Retail Pharmacy Business Startup Expenses & Captial Needed.

This section should be broken down by month and year. If you are still in the planning stage of your business, it may be helpful to estimate how much money will be needed each month until you reach profitability.

Typically, expenses for your business can be broken into a few basic categories:

Startup Costs

Startup costs are typically the first expenses you will incur when beginning an enterprise. These include legal fees, accounting expenses, and other costs associated with getting your business off the ground. The amount of money needed to start a retail pharmacy business varies based on many different variables, but below are a few different types of startup costs for a retail pharmacy business.

Running & Operating Costs

Running costs refer to ongoing expenses related directly with operating your business over time like electricity bills or salaries paid out each month. These types of expenses will vary greatly depending on multiple variables such as location, team size, utility costs, etc.

Marketing & Sales Expenses

You should include any costs associated with marketing and sales, such as advertising and promotions, website design or maintenance. Also, consider any additional expenses that may be incurred if you decide to launch a new product or service line. For example, if your retail pharmacy business has an existing website that needs an upgrade in order to sell more products or services, then this should be listed here.

7. Financial Plan & Projections

A financial plan is an important part of any business plan, as it outlines how the business will generate revenue and profit, and how it will use that profit to grow and sustain itself. To devise a financial plan for your retail pharmacy business, you will need to consider a number of factors, including your start-up costs, operating costs, projected revenue, and expenses.

Here are some steps you can follow to devise a financial plan for your retail pharmacy business plan:

  • Determine your start-up costs: This will include the cost of purchasing or leasing the space where you will operate your business, as well as the cost of buying or leasing any equipment or supplies that you need to start the business.
  • Estimate your operating costs: Operating costs will include utilities, such as electricity, gas, and water, as well as labor costs for employees, if any, and the cost of purchasing any materials or supplies that you will need to run your business.
  • Project your revenue: To project your revenue, you will need to consider the number of customers you expect to have and the average amount they will spend on each visit. You can use this information to estimate how much money you will make from selling your products or services.
  • Estimate your expenses: In addition to your operating costs, you will need to consider other expenses, such as insurance, marketing, and maintenance. You will also need to set aside money for taxes and other fees.
  • Create a budget: Once you have estimated your start-up costs, operating costs, revenue, and expenses, you can use this information to create a budget for your business. This will help you to see how much money you will need to start the business, and how much profit you can expect to make.
  • Develop a plan for using your profit: Finally, you will need to decide how you will use your profit to grow and sustain your business. This might include investing in new equipment, expanding the business, or saving for a rainy day.

Starting Pharmacy Business Plan (PDF)

pharmacy business plan

The medical fraternity is a key element of society owing to the ever-present demand for healthcare services. Medical drugs none or erratic availability can seriously cripple the effectiveness of healthcare initiatives in a country. This simple rationale makes it relevant for as many pharmacies as possible to be set up. If this is the kind of field you would want to venture into, then starting a pharmacy business is the way to go. Once you have everything set up you can be sure to realize revenue daily just as long as you have what people mostly look for. Starting a pharmacy business is heavily regulated though. There is so much you have to adhere to before you can start operating. However, the pharmacy business is highly lucrative. This article will outline how to start the medical pharmacy business, and the pharmacy business plan – PDF, Word and Excel.

Market Research

You cannot gamble when it comes to a pharmacy business; do your homework thoroughly. You must know what type of drugs and other value-added services are on demand. You must be so diligent on this to a point where you only stock up with what are people are really looking for. As earlier on mentioned you can get such information by striking up working relationships with healthcare centres. You can also do surveys to understand the needs of your intended target market. Having people with a pharmacy background on board can help in providing expert knowledge in your pursuit to acquire information.

You must study other existing pharmacies to draw insights from their business operations. You will be examining the types of medication and/or services that they offer. You also study the demographics of their clients, the types of clients they serve and how they market their businesses. You also consider their locations so as to get some idea on how they chose them and also musing on where it would be best for you to set up. The nature of the surrounding environment plays a huge role in determining what people mostly look for in a pharmacy. So if you have an intended location in mind, take time to study that. For instance, locating a pharmacy near an academy institution (e.g. a university) leads to different needs as opposed to locating it near a big hospital or a neighbourhood. It’s very important to have a good pharmacy business plan.

Business Model

Our central focus in this discussion is the pharmacy retail model. You can think of it as the direct to customer (DTC) or direct sales model. This means you stock up your pharmacy outlet with mainly products customers can buy. Stocking means you simply have to source the products, mostly drugs or medications then you resell. You can source pre-packed products or in some cases you purchase bulk packages that you then repack into smaller units.

It is understandable why the retail model is the most used business model for the pharmacy business. To do the actual manufacturing of the medications or medical products is costly. At times the required raw materials must be imported, depending on which country you are in. Even when available locally, they tend to be quite expensive. That is why the best business model for your pharmacy business is the retail model (also known as direct to customer or direct sales model).

Location, Premises And Equipment

Choice of location should be carefully considered if you are to realize good sales. The most obvious preference is to locate your pharmacy in a central business district. This will feed off the fact that most healthcare facilities will close by thus making it easy for prospective customers to reach you. The basic things to consider when choosing a location are the presence of substantial human and vehicle traffic, easy accessibility (by foot or otherwise) and easy discoverability. The premises must be sufficiently big enough to allow free movement of staff and clients. A pharmacy must be brightly lit (white walls and floors aid in this) and must be squeaky clean. There must be good ventilation and a generally cosy environment. This means it might be wise to choose a location with no room for sound or air pollution. You will need basic furnishings such as counter tops or booths, shelving or cabinets, siting area furniture and so on. You will also need secure and appropriate storage equipment for the medical supplies. Other required include pharmacy refrigerator, medicine dispensing equipment, compounding equipment as well as personal protection equipment. The costs of premises and equipment should be included in your pharmacy business plan.

License, Insurance And Company Bank Account

Licensing requirements.

There are several licensing aspects that are characteristic of the pharmacy business. It comes as no surprise given the sensitive nature of the business. Your pharmacy business must be formally registered as a business or company. Then you must get a shop operating license – often attainable from your respective municipality or local authorities.

You will also be required to get registered with various regulatory entities. This depends on which country you are in and its applicable laws. Examples of such regulatory entities can be ones that regulate health professionals, medicine control, and pharmacists specifically, amongst others. It is imperative that you comply with all the licensing requirements.

Insurance And Company Bank Account

Insurance starts from as basic as general liability insurance for your pharmacy business. Other examples of insurance cover for your pharmacy business are products liability, theft, professional liability, and more. The best thing to do is to approach reputable insurance providers to get expert guidance. A company bank account is a matter of business principle. Your pharmacy business must have its own company bank account. This helps nurture financial discipline plus it streamlines financial analyses. Most importantly it separates your business finances from your personal finances. Ensuring your personal finances are not liable for your pharmacy business is smart. Opening a company bank account helps you do that.

The products your pharmacy business can sell depend on your type of pharmacy. There several different types, differences usually being a function of what is specialized on. The most common type of pharmacy business though is the community or retail pharmacy. The core products sold in such a pharmacy are prescription medications and over the counter (OTC) medications. Regardless, the range of products you can sell in your pharmacy is broad and diverse.

For example, you can also include herbal products, medical supplies, toiletries, home care products, and cosmetic products, amongst others. Screening or testing services can also be offered in-store. For instance, it would be convenient for people to have their blood sugar, blood pressure, weight, and cholesterol checked in your pharmacy. In the same vein you can also sell self-test kits. What is important is to stock products informed by market intelligence and customer needs. The products you intend to sell should be included in your pharmacy business plan.

Staff Requirements

Staffing requirements depend on the scope and scale of your pharmacy business. However, you do not need that many people to operate a pharmacy. At the core, you must have at least one qualified pharmacist – that is a must! In fact, it is often a law you must abide by. In some countries, the stipulation can be that the owner must be a pharmacist. Alternatively, if you are not, you can enter a business partnership arrangement with a pharmacist. Then you can have assistants or attendants that can help the pharmacist(s), lile pharmacy technicians. The only caveat though is that pharmacist salaries are typically hefty. Thus, despite needing only a few hands, the need for pharmacist(s) swells your wage bill.

Marketing And Sales Strategy

Choice of location is pertinent to marketing and sales.

The choice of location of your pharmacy business is critically important. You must situate your pharmacy business somewhere surrounded by high vehicle and human traffic. Your pharmacy outlet must be mostly built with transparent full length glasses. You can also add in neon lighting to make the pharmacy alluring. Have colourful signage immediately around and in its vicinity.

Active Online Presence

Have a business website set up for your pharmacy business. Open social media accounts and keep them up to date and active. Be interactive online, especially to cultivate word of mouth and referrals. You can conduct online competitions or giveaways to achieve that. List your pharmacy business on notable online listing platforms or marketplaces.

Build Working Relationships With Healthcare Providers

The thrust of this is to have them refer customers to you. You can approach several hospitals, private clinics, and the like. Then you build strategic alliances so that you get customers effortlessly. Referrals are a huge driver of sales in the pharmacy business. It is interesting to note that it is possible to not only serve individual customers. You can actually have private clinics or surgeries and even big healthcare centres as clients. You might not even serve them directly but they can refer their clients to you. So in your business setup remember to work out an operational framework that enables you to build synergies with healthcare centres. They will also be a good source of information on what types of medications are usually sought after.

The prospects in the pharmacy business are significant and infinite. You just have to know that the pharmacy business is capital intensive. However, it is doable and there is lots of money to be made.

Keys To Success

Generally, people who have been active in the pharmacy industry before or those with pharmacy backgrounds are most suited to start such a business. This is because a pharmacy business is atypical and is characterised by rules of engagement that are specialist and not necessarily the same with other businesses. Even if you do not fit into those two prerequisites it does not mean you cannot start a pharmacy business. However, you will have to ensure you have someone or some people on board who wield the technical and specialist expertise.

A pharmacy is quite simple to set up i.e. you just need a store space that you furnish with appropriate shelving or cabinets to display the drugs. The work that goes into reaching that, though, is demanding because you have to research on so many things prior. There are very strict regulatory requirements to be adhered to and that can be very tasking. A pharmacy must be able, to a greater extent, to have in stock the most commonly sought-after drugs. This means one must not only know what to stock but to strike strategic alliances with suppliers.

Do not be too hung up on stocking with all the most common medications from the onset. This type of business thrives on user-generated data meaning that you get to understand the needs of your target market better as you tread along. The requests you get and your basic sales records will give you a comprehensive picture on what is mostly needed.

Some of the value-added services you can include in your value proposition are several. Some examples are screenings (e.g. blood pressure), immunizations, medical wares, and supplying oxygen amongst many others. The type of services will be informed by either prior research or by realizations borne after some time in operating the business.

If you are contemplating starting a pharmacy business you are on the right track. Just remember to cross the t’s and dot the i’s when it comes to any licensing, certifications and regulatory requirements. Getting legal advice can be very beneficial so that you know what is expected of you. You can also approach pharmacy-related boards or institutions to get more information.

Health spending accounted for 9.3% of GDP on average across OECD countries in 2011. The Pharmaceutical expenditure, as a percentage of total expenditure on health, accounted for 15%. The pharmaceutical sector is highly regulated. On describe the major characteristics of the world pharmaceutical industry as one increased globalization, changing structure of competition and increased competitiveness. This are growing pressures on discovery and development. Drug liabilities become more frequent and more costly. The pharmaceutical industry is under immense pressure by external and internal stakeholders. Government and National Health Services are monopsonic practices. Pharmaceutical companies are criticised for high prices, over-intensive sales and marketing activities, presents to medical doctors, clinical trials and industry – government alliances. Lawyers, medical journals, physicians, politicians, and the media use product liabilities and marketing activities to denounce pharmaceutical companies as culprits. The pharmaceutical sector needs to demonstrate responsibility and take steps to increase awareness. Transparency would increase the credibility of the pharmaceutical industry. Corporate governance will prevent corruption by being in compliance with the legislation and establishing their own internal policies designed to prevent corruption. All firms will act more responsibly. In order to rebuild the trust the industry needs to work together and quickly.

Continuous innovation is one of the pharmaceutical industry's most defi ning characteristics. New medications can be crucial for maintaining the quality of human life, and may even affect its duration. The sales potential is staggering: the global pharmaceutical market is expected to reach $1.1 trillion by 2015. The pressure to succeed is tremendous. Yet, pharmaceutical innovation is hardly an orderly, predictable process. It follows a technology-push model dependent on a meandering path of scientifi c breakthroughs with uneven timing and hard to foresee outcomes. Technological competency, decades of rigorous research, and profound understanding of unmet customer needs, while necessary, may prove insuffi cient for market success as the critical decision for commercialization remains outside the fi rm. Drug innovation as a business process requires savvy strategic, organizational, and managerial decisions. It is already enjoying intensive research coverage, giving rise to abundant but relatively dispersed knowledge of the mechanisms driving drug discovery and development. In this chapter, we present a comprehensive overview of the process of drug innovation from a business and academic perspective. We discuss the evolving organizational forms and models for collaboration, summarize signifi cant empirical regularities, and highlight differences in market positions related to fi rms' strategic orientation, innovation emphasis, attitudes to risk, and specialized resources. As a guide to future research, critical drivers and modes for drug innovation are systematized in a unifying framework of characteristics and process decisions, and multiple areas in need of further scrutiny, analysis, and optimization are suggested. Because of its rich potential and high signifi cance, research on drug innovation seems poised to gain increasing momentum in the years to come.

A critical exploration of the history and present dynamics of drug advertising in the United States reveals how advertising practices exemplify the extent to which late capitalist market rationality impacts on popular under- standings of medicine, well being, and disease. An historical overview of drug advertising and regulation thereof contextualizes a closer analysis of the ways in which the pharmaceutical industry acts to maximize profits through marketing efforts and the creation of diseases as platforms for the expansion of drug product markets. In this way U.S. drug manufacturers operate on a variety of communicative levels to ensure that their promotional messages are among the most widely disseminated. As medical and pharmaceutical technology develops and plays an increasingly pronounced role in everyday life from casual to more profound levels via the mass media, a critical and historical understanding of how and for whom it acts may become a vital focus of future inquiry on social and communicative phenomena and processes.

Opt-e-scrip, Inc., has developed a patented test for determining the efficacy of drugs in individual patients so that doctors can prescribe the drug that really works for each person. In addition, test results show that older, less expensive drugs are often as or more efficacious than the newer, expensive drugs pushed by manufacturers. It, thus, benefits physicians, patients, and drug benefit payers. However, the company has had difficulty entering the market, given its complexity and their lack of resources. The test remains a product in search of an application and a customer willing to pay for its usage.

Create a form in Word that users can complete or print

In Word, you can create a form that others can fill out and save or print.  To do this, you will start with baseline content in a document, potentially via a form template.  Then you can add content controls for elements such as check boxes, text boxes, date pickers, and drop-down lists. Optionally, these content controls can be linked to database information.  Following are the recommended action steps in sequence.

Show the Developer tab

In Word, be sure you have the Developer tab displayed in the ribbon.  (See how here:  Show the developer tab .)

Open a template or a blank document on which to base the form

You can start with a template or just start from scratch with a blank document.

Start with a form template

Go to File > New .

In the  Search for online templates  field, type  Forms or the kind of form you want. Then press Enter .

In the displayed results, right-click any item, then select  Create.

Start with a blank document

Select Blank document .

Add content to the form

Go to the  Developer  tab Controls section where you can choose controls to add to your document or form. Hover over any icon therein to see what control type it represents. The various control types are described below. You can set properties on a control once it has been inserted.

To delete a content control, right-click it, then select Remove content control  in the pop-up menu.

Note:  You can print a form that was created via content controls. However, the boxes around the content controls will not print.

Insert a text control

The rich text content control enables users to format text (e.g., bold, italic) and type multiple paragraphs. To limit these capabilities, use the plain text content control .

Click or tap where you want to insert the control.

Rich text control button

To learn about setting specific properties on these controls, see Set or change properties for content controls .

Insert a picture control

A picture control is most often used for templates, but you can also add a picture control to a form.

Picture control button

Insert a building block control

Use a building block control  when you want users to choose a specific block of text. These are helpful when you need to add different boilerplate text depending on the document's specific purpose. You can create rich text content controls for each version of the boilerplate text, and then use a building block control as the container for the rich text content controls.

building block gallery control

Select Developer and content controls for the building block.

Insert a combo box or a drop-down list

In a combo box, users can select from a list of choices that you provide or they can type in their own information. In a drop-down list, users can only select from the list of choices.

combo box button

Select the content control, and then select Properties .

To create a list of choices, select Add under Drop-Down List Properties .

Type a choice in Display Name , such as Yes , No , or Maybe .

Repeat this step until all of the choices are in the drop-down list.

Add protection to a form

If you want to limit how much others can edit or format a form, use the Restrict Editing command:

Open the form that you want to lock or protect.

Select Developer > Restrict Editing .

Restrict editing button

After selecting restrictions, select Yes, Start Enforcing Protection .

If the developer tab isn't displayed in the ribbon, see Show the Developer tab .

Open a template or use a blank document

To create a form in Word that others can fill out, start with a template or document and add content controls. Content controls include things like check boxes, text boxes, and drop-down lists. If you’re familiar with databases, these content controls can even be linked to data.

Go to File > New from Template .

How to Write a Food and Beverage Business Plan + Sample Business Plan PDF

Free Download: Sample Food and Beverage Business Plan Templates

The food and beverage sector is booming. Restaurant openings rose 10% in 2023 compared to 2022 — even higher than in pre-pandemic years.

From fine dining to food trucks, farmers to brewers, and wholesalers to coffee makers, there are opportunities across the food and beverage industry.

But starting a business without covering the basics — your operations plan, marketing tactics, financial strategy, and more — carries huge risks.

That’s why we recommend you write a business plan.

  • Why write a food and beverage business plan?

Writing a business plan is an easy first step that you can start for free. Plus, businesses that take time to plan are significantly more successful than those that don’t.

Many food and beverage establishments fail because of one of the following:

  • Poor inventory management
  • Underestimated expenses
  • High employee turnover
  • Misjudged the size of their market

Writing a business plan can help you:

  • Develop processes for managing inventory and logistics
  • Understand your cash flows and create a realistic expense budget
  • Budget for competitive employee pay that increases worker retention
  • Analyze your competition and determine how big your market is

If you’re looking for funding from investors for your business, you’ll definitely need a business plan.

  • How to write a food and beverage business plan

Many business plans follow a standard format and you can use it as a starting point when writing your own plan. Here’s what that includes:

Executive summary

  • Company summary and funding needs
  • Products and services
  • Marketing plan
  • Management team

Financial plan

For food and beverage companies, you must give extra attention to your market analysis, operations plan, and financial forecasts.

If you’re ready to start, download a free business plan template and fill it out as you read this article.

A sample business plan outline for a food and beverage business.

Every business plan should include an executive summary . It’s a brief outline summarizing the plan, no more than one or two pages.

We recommend that you write the executive summary last after fleshing out the details of your plan.

Just summarize the vision for your business, describe your offerings and target market , and touch on your management team and financials. Don’t go into tons of detail — just provide a high-level sense of what you want your business to accomplish.

Opportunity: problem and solution

This section of your food and beverage business plan describes the opportunity you hope to capture.

Maybe you’re a farmer looking to diversify your revenue streams by distributing to grocery stores. Or a bar owner with high-end liquor that competitors in the market aren’t serving.

Whatever your business is, describe the gap in the market and how you aim to fill it.

If you’re operating a more common type of business, like a restaurant , you can probably keep this section short. But it’s useful to document what makes your business unique and it will help focus your sales and marketing efforts later on.

Market analysis

In a field as crowded with competitors as the food and beverage space, a detailed market analysis is essential.

Your focus should be on identifying the specific customer segments you aim to serve.

Maybe you’re a butcher with connections to fresh livestock. Will you be more successful selling directly to consumers, or should you focus on selling to grocery stores and markets in your area?

Or, you’re opening  a diner. Should your menu focus on healthy meals or easy-to-make child-friendly options?

These are the types of questions that market research helps you answer. This section should detail the defining characteristics of your target market, including the demographics and preferences of your ideal customer and the size of the market you’re targeting. Market research questions specific to a food and beverage business could include:

  • Business location and characteristics
  • Area income
  • Local food and beverage preferences
  • Existing food and beverage options

Elaborate on how your food and beverage offerings align with that target market ’s needs. Remember, you can’t please everyone, so focus on a specific group of people or type of person and build out from there.

Marketing and sales

For food and beverage businesses promotions are how you stand out and seize a share of your market.

The marketing and advertising chapter of your business plan is where you’ll detail your strategies for capturing the attention — and loyalty — of the customers you identified as your target market in the previous section.

With so many options for consumers in the food and beverage space, you’ll likely have to rely on multiple marketing channels , including::

  • Advertising on websites, television, and in relevant publications.
  • Content marketing — developing an engaging website and writing blog content that’s search engine optimized to drive traffic to your site.
  • Engaging with your customers on social media.
  • Offering discounts and customer loyalty programs.
  • Appearing at food and beverage industry trade shows and community events.

It doesn’t matter how delicious your recipes are, how fresh your crops are, or how innovative your cocktails are — if you don’t operate efficiently, your business probably won’t last long.

The operations strategy may be the most detailed section of your business plan, especially if you’re writing it for a bank loan or investment. This section describes how you will run your business day to day.

When writing the operations section, describe the following:

Physical space

Whether it’s a restaurant, a farm, or a food transportation business, describe the space you’re operating in, and all of the physical assets and equipment you’ll need to be successful.

If it’s a sit-down restaurant, consider including a floorplan mockup in your appendix.

Supply chain

List the suppliers and partners that get your product to customers. Think about the businesses you purchase ingredients from, the warehouses that goods are stored in, and the trucking companies that deliver your products to grocery stores.

These are your supply chain partners. It’s crucial that you maintain good relationships with them.

Production processes

How long it takes to make your product, and what materials and equipment are required. Documenting how you produce your goods or services demonstrates that you understand the costs of making them.

You may also uncover ways to produce them more quickly, or at a lesser cost.

Detail how you’ll handle matters of efficiency like order fulfillment, storage, shipping, and returns, as well as customer satisfaction. If you provide delivery services, document how you will handle the process of getting your product to customers’ homes or businesses.

List your staffing needs, training, and experience requirements for key staff. Also, document the management structure of your business.

This helps ensure that important tasks you don’t have time to monitor are being done and that workers are being supervised.

Describe investments in payment processing systems, inventory management software, and other tools that support sales or operations in your business. Cataloging your technology systems will help you determine where it might make sense to invest in upgrades for efficiency.

Take some time to write a financial plan . Create detailed financial projections, including sales , expenses , and profitability .

If that sounds intimidating, take a deep breath, and remember that financial forecasts are really just best guesses. If you’re running an existing business, you can start with your previous year’s numbers. If you’re starting, make an educated guess about where you hope to be financially a year from now.

Investors will want to see a:

  • Sales forecast
  • Income statement (also called a profit and loss statement )
  • Cash flow statement
  • Balance sheet

If you use a tool like LivePlan , you’ll be able to build out your financial forecasts relatively quickly, even if you don’t have experience with business numbers.

Even if you aren’t seeking investment, the financial plan is crucial for understanding the viability of your business. It allows you to adjust your business model based on projected performance, and make informed decisions about where to spend your money.
