Because of our drive for excellence, we were able to engage some of the finest business consultants in Edo State – Nigeria to look through our business concept and together we were able to critically examine the prospect of the business and to access ourselves to be sure we have what it takes to run a standard oil palm plantation business that can compete favorably in the oil palm plantation line of business.

In view of that, we were able to take stock of our strengths, our weakness, our opportunities and also the threats that we are likely going to be exposed to in Nigeria. Here is a of what we got from the critically conducted SWOT Analysis Benson Edosa & Sons Oil Palm Company;

Our strength lies in the fact that we own are going to be cultivating our oil palm in a very fertile land. We have state of the art palm oil processing facility that has positioned us to meet the demand of palm oil in Nigeria and the world at large even if the demand tripled overnight or if we have a massive order to meet and emergency need.

Another factor that counts to our advantage is the background of our Chief Executive Office; he has a robust experience in the industry and also a pretty good academic qualification to match the experience. We are not ignoring the fact that our team of highly qualified and dedicated workers will also serve as a strength for our organization.

We do not take for granted the fact that we have weaknesses. The fact that we are cultivating oil palm and also setting up a palm oil processing business in a city with other palm oil processing businesses might likely pose a challenge for us in breaking into the already saturated market in Nigeria.

In essence our chosen location might be our weakness. But nevertheless, we have plans to launch out with a big bang. We know with that, we will be able to create a positive impression and we have a proper handle when it comes to building on already gathered momentum.

  • Opportunities:

The opportunities available to us are unlimited. Loads of people make use of palm oil on a daily basis and all what we are going to do to push our palm kernel, palm oil and byproducts to them is already perfected. Benin in Edo state is just ideal for our oil palm plantation business because the land is ideal for farming palm trees, plus there is a large market for palm kernels in Edo State.

The threat that is likely going to confront us is the fact that we are competing with already established oil palm plantations and palm oil processing businesses in Edo State and also there are other entrepreneurs who are likely going to launch similar business within the location of our business.

Another threat that we are likely going to face is unfavorable government policies and economic downturn. Usually economic downturn affects purchasing / spending powers and unfavorable government policies can hinder exporting of palm products to other countries of the world.

7. MARKET ANALYSIS

  • Market Trends

It is a common trend in this business to find oil palm plantations positioning their business in locations and communities where they can have access to arable farmland and cheap labor. If you make the mistake of positioning this type of business in a location where you would have to pay huge amount to secure good farm land, then you would have to struggle to make profits and maintain your overhead and logistics.

So also, another trend in this line of business is that most oil palm plantation businesses also run palm oil processing plant and they look beyond the market within their locations or even Nigeria. They are involved in packaging and exporting palm oil to communities abroad with robust Nigerian or African communities. united states of America, Canada and most countries in Europe are their major targets.

In the bid to stay afloat and continue to make profits from this line of business, most standard oil palm plantation businesses tend to work hard to ensure that they get grants and support from the federal government. With that, it is easier for them to maximize profits and grow the business.

8. Our Target Market

When it comes to retailing palm oil and its byproducts, there is indeed a wide range of available customers. In essence, our target market can’t be restricted to just a group of people, but to all those who make use of palm oil for cooking and also all those who make use of palm kernel and palm oil as raw materials in their cottage industries .

The target market for palm products is wide and far reaching, you can create your own niche yourself to serve a specific purpose. In view of that, we have conducted our market research and we have ideas of what our target market would be expecting from us.

We are in business to engage in retailing and wholesale distribution cum exporting of palm products to the following groups of people;

  • Palm oil processing plants who don’t own their own oil palm plantation
  • Households who make use of palm oil for cooking
  • Restaurants and canteens that make use of palm oil for cooking
  • Nigerian cum African communities in the united states of America, Canada, and Europe
  • Small scale businesses that make use of oil palm byproducts as part of their raw materials.

Our Competitive Advantage

The fact that the government of Nigeria is willing to support entrepreneurs who are into crop cultivation cum oil palm cultivation means that the business is open to all and sundry hence it is expected that there will be high – level competition in the industry. There is hardly any community where palm trees can easily be cultivated that you won’t find several oil palm plantations and oil processing businesses especially on a small scale.

As a standard oil palm plantation business, we know that gaining a competitive edge requires a detailed analysis of the demographics of the surrounding area and the nature of existing competitors. And even if you are successful at first, new competitors could enter your market at any time to steal your regular customers; hence we will not hesitate to adopt successful and workable strategies from our competitors.

We are going to be one of the very few oil palm plantations with a standard palm oil processing plant in State – Edo State that will also engage in wholesale distribution of oil palm byproducts across Nigeria and also export palm oil to other countries of the world.

Another competitive advantage that we have is the vast experience of our management team, we have people on board who understand how to grow a business from scratch to profitability. Our robust distribution network, latest oil palm cultivation and processing tools and of course our excellent customer service culture will definitely count as a strong strength for the business.

Lastly, our employees will be well taken care of, and their welfare package will be among the best within our category in the industry, meaning that they will be more than willing to build the business with us and help deliver our goals and achieve all our aims and objectives.

We will also give good working conditions and commissions to freelance sales agents that we will recruit from time to time.

Here are some of the most common types of palm oil businesses in Nigeria:

Smallholder farms:

This type of palm oil business is common in villages. Families go to their farms and harvest palm fruits, then process them and sell the oil to middlemen who come to these villages to buy this palm oil.

Palm Oil Supply and Storage:

This is the most capital-friendly option for the palm oil business.

The system requires that you buy palm oil cheaply from local vendors in the village, then store them for quite some months and sell them at a higher price in a much-developed environment.

Palm oil supply and storage is the most common type of palm oil business in Nigeria.

Palm oil mills:

Mills are an essential part of the palm oil industry in Nigeria. These mills are responsible for buying the harvested palm fruits from smallholder farms and processing them into palm oil.

The process involves a series of mechanical and chemical processes, such as sterilization, threshing, pressing, and clarification, to extract the oil from the fruit.

Once the oil is extracted, it is either sold to wholesalers or middlemen, depending on the mill’s business model.

The processes for starting any of these palm oil business models are almost the same.

Conduct Market Research

This means studying the market to learn important things like who else is selling palm oil, who wants to buy palm oil, and how much people are willing to pay for it.

Understanding these things will help you make smart choices when starting your business.

It’s also important to figure out how much it costs to make and transport palm oil, and how much other people are selling it for. Learn More 10 Best Tips for Conducting Market Research in Nigeria

Set Aside Your Capital and Resources

For a small-scale supply and storage business, you can start with as little as N100,000 to N500,000.

This should cover expenses such as buying palm oil from local vendors, transportation costs, and storage expenses.

You will need containers to store your palm oil. The best are plastic 25-liter or 20-liter gallons. If you are short on money, look for used jerry cans that are still in good condition

Purchase a weighing scale to measure the quantity of palm oil you buy and sell.

Get funnels and a hose. You will also need a clean strip of cloth for filtering the oil in case you purchase a dirty one.

Find a means of transporting the palm oil from the supplier to your storage facility and from your storage facility to the buyers.

A vehicle or a motorcycle will serve this purpose.

Finally, you will need a storage facility to store the palm oil. This can be a rented warehouse or a room in your house.

How to Store Palm Oil for a Long Time

To store palm oil for a long time in Nigeria, it is important to follow some basic storage guidelines.

Here are some tips:

  • Store palm oil in a clean, dry, and airtight container.

Avoid storing it in a container made of metal or other reactive materials, as this will cause the oil to spoil or become sour.

Plastic drums and plastic jerry cans are best.

  • Keep the container in a cool, dark, and dry place. Exposure to heat and light will cause the oil to deteriorate and spoil quickly.
  • Ensure that the container is tightly sealed to prevent air and moisture from entering.

Exposure to air and moisture causes oxidation. Oxidation makes the oil rancid. (smell and taste unpleasant.)

  • If possible, store palm oil in smaller quantities. This will help to reduce the frequency of opening the container.
  • Avoid storing palm oil near strong-smelling foods or chemicals, as it can absorb odors and flavors.

By following these tips, you can store palm oil for a long time in Nigeria without the risk of spoilage or deterioration.

It’s also important to note that even when stored properly, palm oil has a limited shelf life and should be used within a reasonable amount of time

How Long Can Store Palm Oil Last?

Palm oil will last a long time if it’s stored correctly.

If the container is closed and kept in a cool, dry, and dark place, it will last up to two years.

But if the container is opened, the oil won’t last as long because air and moisture will get inside.

Don’t put palm oil in the fridge because it will turn solid.

Where to Buy Palm Oil Cheap in Nigeria

There are several places you can buy palm oil at a relatively cheap price in Nigeria. The best is the local markets in villages where you can buy directly from farmers or traders.

Some popular markets where you can buy palm oil at a good price include Mile 12 Market in Lagos, Bodija Market in Ibadan, Better Life Market in Abia, and Orie Awgu in Enugu.

You can also buy palm oil in large quantities from the oil palm plantation estates scattered across the country.

These estates often sell at a cheaper rate than the local markets because they produce palm oil in large quantities.

Where to Buy Palm Oil in Bulk in Nigeria

If you’re looking to buy palm oil in bulk in Nigeria, there are several options available to you.

One option is to visit local markets such as the Mile 12 market in Lagos, the Kuto market in Abeokuta, or the Garki Model Market in Abuja.

These markets are known for their large selection of food items, including palm oil, and you may be able to negotiate a bulk price with the sellers.

Another option is to contact wholesalers or distributors of palm oil directly.

Some companies that specialize in the production and distribution of palm oil in Nigeria include PZ Wilmar, Okomu Oil Palm Company, and Presco Plc.

You can contact these companies to inquire about their bulk pricing and delivery options.

You can also consider searching for palm oil suppliers on online marketplaces such as Alibaba, Jiji, or Konga.

However, it’s important to be cautious when making purchases from online sellers and to verify their credentials before making any payments.

Risk in Palm Oil Business In Nigeria

The palm oil business in Nigeria, like any other business, has some risks that you should be aware of before investing your money.

These risks include the following:

  • Fluctuations in prices: The prices of palm oil can be volatile, which means that they can rise and fall unexpectedly due to factors such as changes in demand, supply, and government policies.
  • Competition: There is a lot of competition in the palm oil industry in Nigeria, which can make it difficult to establish a foothold in the market and compete with established players.
  • Climate and environmental factors: Palm oil production is highly dependent on the weather and climate, and events such as droughts, floods, and diseases can have a significant impact on production and profitability.
  • Political and regulatory risks: Political instability, corruption, and changes in government policies also pose risks to the palm oil business in Nigeria.

Palm oil production and processing business plan in Nigeria

What We Covered In This Article

Overview of Palm Oil Production in Nigeria

Palm oil production is one of the major sources of income for Nigerians. In 2021, it was estimated that 1,280 thousand metric tonnes of palm oil were produced in Nigeria. This shows the immensity of the production of palm oil in the nation. Infact, Nigeria is one of the five nations, leading in the production of palm oil in the world.

Palm oil production has to do with the extraction of edible oil from the mesocarp of the palm fruit, which is suitable for human consumption and is used in making various kinds of products and things.

Palm oil was one of the major sources of income for the Nigerian government in times past, before the discovery of crude oil. However, it is being focused on again, as the government is now investing a lot to revive that sector of the economy.

Overview of Palm Oil Processing

The Palm tree is important, as many things can be derived from it, to be used by humans. To start with, palm fruits can be used to get palm oil, the stems can be made into woods for building, palm wine can also be tapped from palm trees as a form of refreshment, etc.

Now, Palm oil is gotten from palm fruits and there is an extraction process that takes place before the oil is gotten from the mesocarp of the palm fruit. The Palm fruits seedlings are planted, and after they have been harvested, the bunches of the palm fruit are threshed and sterilized, to get the palm fruits from them.

Afterwards, the palm fruits are crushed, to extract the crude palm oil. This crude palm oil is then purified and dried before it can be put to use at home, in industries, etc. It can also be exported to other nations for exchange in international trades.

Uses Of Palm Oil

  • Feed production:

Palm oil is also used in the production of feed for animals and livestock, due to its heat-resistant and edible nature.

It is used in making feed for animals, ranging from dogs, cats, pigs, etc. Also, since it is good as preservatives, it helps to prolong the lifespan of feed, to help it stay longer on the shelf, before expiration.

  • Preservation:

Palm oil is used as a preservative in many food items, ranging from human food to feed for animals. It is used in preserving food items to ensure that they don’t get spoiled on time.

Requirements Needed To Start Palm Oil Business

In starting a palm oil business, there are many things required to be acquired to attain success. Some of them are as follows;

  • Capital:

Capital refers to the money used in starting the palm oil business, which would be used in purchasing the facilities needed to kickstart.

Firstly, you need to purchase the land where you would plant palm oil seedlings. This could range from many acres to some hectares. It is important to get a large portion of land, to help you plant as many trees as possible.

You would also need capital to hire workers to work on the land, from the planting stage to the harvesting and transportation stage.

Some equipment and materials such as tractors, fertilizer, etc also need to be purchased to aid the planting process.

  • Land:

After securing the capital for the business, the next thing is to make the purchase of the land for the palm oil plantation. When buying the land for the plantation, it is important that the quality of the soil is examined, to ascertain that it would be suitable to grow palm trees.

Now, If you are unable to determine the fertility of the soil by yourself, you can hire experts to do this for you. This is important, to ensure growth for the palm trees after planting.

Another key thing to consider when purchasing the land for your palm oil plantation is the closeness of the land to your buyers. This would make it easy to transport your palm fruits to customers, as at the due, without hassle.

Another requirement for your palm oil business is the labour that would be needed in planting, harvesting, and transporting the produce of the farmland.

You would need to employ extra hands to assist you in the work, and you would have to pay them.

  • Storage:

Another requirement for the palm oil business is the storage facilities needed to store and keep the palm fruits and palm oil, after being extracted and purified.

Storage facilities are very important for the palm oil business, to preserve the palm oil got, from the extraction mill. This is also important to protect them from getting spoiled before they get to their buyers.

  • Transportation:

Another requirement for a palm oil business is the transportation facilities needed to transport your equipment, palm fruits, palm oil, etc to and from your palm oil plantation.

You could get trucks to help you transport things to and fro the plantation.

  • Suppliers/Retailers:

Getting reliable suppliers to supply you with the needed equipment, palm fruit seedlings, and other things is also a key requirement to consider when starting your palm oil business.

Getting retailers who would buy directly from you to supply to consumers is also important, to ensure the smooth transfer of palm oil from your plantation to customers, in exchange for money.

Production season of palm oil:

The production season of palm oil differs from nation to nation. However, in Nigeria, the best time to plant palm fruit is during the rainy season, which is usually around June-September.

This is recommended so that the roots of the trees would have been well-rooted in the ground before the dry season comes in.

Now, an oil palm starts to produce about 3 to 4 years after it has been planted. So, patience is required as a palm oil businessman or woman. It is also important to not relent during this waiting period, as one would be required to tend the plant from time to. time, by removing weeds, and doing other things to enhance growth.

Where to get palm seedling for planting:

Just like for every other tree, to grow palm nuts, you need to first get the seedlings to plant. And this is the cheapest way because palm trees are rarely grown through cutting, layering, and other asexual means.

You can either get them from the seed pods of flowering palms or buy them. And these palm seeds differ in size. While some are small and bright red, some others are very large.

Now, if you would like to get your seeds from your tree, it is advisable to get them immediately when they fall from the tree; showing that they are ripe. It is also important to use these seeds on time. This is because the lifespan of some of them is not long, however, for some, they can last for up to a year.

Now, you must test your palm seeds before planting them. This would help determine whether it would germinate or not. To test, simply put the seed in a container of warm water. Now, if the seed floats in water, it is not good for use. But if it sinks in the water, then it is good for planting.

Is the palm oil business profitable?:

The palm oil business is highly profitable, due to the many uses of palm oil, domestically and even industrially.

As a palm oil businessman or woman, there is always a huge demand for your product, as it is needed in high quantity and quality in nations, industries, families, etc. And although it is a capital-intensive business, its rewards and profits are far-reaching.

How much does it cost to start a palm oil business?

Starting a palm oil business depends on the type you want to venture into. To start a palm oil plantation business, you would need to purchase or rent some acres of land, and this would cost a lot. You would also need to buy palm fruit seedlings, and this would also require a lot of money, hiring manpower, machinery, etc also costs a lot.

On the other hand, if you were to start a palm oil extraction mill or sell palm oil directly, you would not spend as much as if you wanted to start a palm oil plantation.

You could decide to set up a palm oil plantation, where you would plant palm trees and harvest for others to get palm fruits from. You could also decide to have an extraction mill, where palm fruits are crushed to extract the oil from them. Or rather, be involved in the direct sale of palm oil.

Whatever choice you make, you need to consider your capital, skill, interest, etc.

  • Draft a business plan:

After deciding on the kind of palm oil business you would be venturing into, you should move forward to draft a business plan.

Your business plan would include the kind of palm oil you intend to start with, the amount of capital needed, how the capital would be sourced, mode of operation, etc.

  • Register Your Palm Oil Business With CAC:

CAC is the corporate body in charge of registering businesses in Nigeria. To make your business legally recognized by the law, you need to register the business under the business name you have chosen for it.

Registering your palm oil business with CAC also gives you access to some loan facilities, grants, and other national recognition.

  • Set up your production factory or store:

Now, you can go ahead to set up your production factory or store, depending on the type of palm oil business you would be venturing into.

If you would be going into the direct sale of palm oil, you would not need a factory. But for an extraction mill, you would need a production factory, as well as storage facilities to store the palm oil, before you sell them.

  • Secure suppliers:

Securing reliable suppliers is also important. As a palm tree plantation owner, you need to secure suppliers to supply you with palm fruit seedlings and other equipment.

Also, as a palm oil mill extraction business man or woman, you are to secure suppliers who own palm tree plantations, who would give you a steady supply of palm fruits to extract palm oil from.

  • Plan for logistics and transportation:

Next up, you need to plan for logistics and transportation to enable you transport the palm oil and palm fruits out of your farmland and extraction mill respectively to people who need them

Transportation is an important aid to trade which is not to be trivialized. A smooth medium of transportation would ensure that your product leaves your factory on time, and gets to the consumers who need them.

  • Market your products:

Now, after securing your transportation details, you are to market your product to prospective wholesalers and retailers who are in the palm oil business.

This is important to facilitate sales and get profits.

In preparing a business plan for your palm oil business, the following items must be included, featuring important details to help you attain success as a businessman or woman.

The following elements shall be considered, to help you come up with a business plan for your palm oil business:

  • Executive Summary:

The executive summary appears first in the business plan. However, it may be the last thing to be written, because it summarises all the details about the whole business plan.

The executive summary contains the amount of capital needed, work plan, estimated income over a period, estimate of labour required, etc.

  • Company Description:

The company description contains information about the kind of business the palm oil establishment is. It talks about whether it would be a palm oil plantation business, a palm oil extraction mill, etc.

It also contains information about whether it is a one-man business (sole proprietorship), partnership, etc.

This segment of the business plan contains information about the individuals involved in the business.

Here, their names and roles are spelt out, to aid comprehension.

Team members could include the Managing director, farmers, secretary, warehouse manager, etc.

  • SWOT Analysis:

SWOT stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats.

This is a very important analysis to be done, which helps you identify your areas of strengths to capitalize on, weaknesses to work on, opportunities to explore, and threats to eliminate.

Strength has to do with the areas where you have a better advantage, as a palm oil business owner. This is to enable you to capitalize on these strengths to get more profit.

Analyzing your weaknesses helps you to know the areas you need to work more on, to get better results. Your weaknesses are also the areas that your competitors may want to take advantage of. So, you need to pay attention to them.

Opportunities refer to new areas or aspects of the palm oil business that you can take advantage of, to increase revenue and expand your network.

Threats refer to things that could pose danger to your business. It could be bad weather conditions, pests, etc.

  • Market Analysis:

Market analysis has to do with examining the market, to know what is in demand per time.

The market analysis would help you understand what consumers need, what kind of packaging appeals to them, how to market to them and how to get them to make purchases.

  • Financial Analysis:

The financial analysis for your palm oil business carries details about how much would be needed to start and run the business.

Capital required to purchase land, machinery, palm fruit seedlings, storage facilities, labourer’s wage, salaries for other staff members, etc.

  • Marketing Strategies:

This involves details about how you intend to market your product and move fully into the market, to sell.

Marketing can be done either through the traditional ways of connecting with retailers who deal in the palm oil business. It could also be through online marketing strategies, using social media, SEO, etc to market your products.

  • Competitive Analysis:

There would always be competition in the palm oil industry. Hence, it is important to carry out a competitor analysis, to check your competitor’s weaknesses, to take advantage of it.

You could also examine the strategies being applied by your competitor, which yields a lot for them and apply those strategies too, to get better in your business.

The appendix of your palm oil business plan includes additional documents that are not included in the body of the business plan. It could include charts, tables, graphs, and some other important elements, which are not yet included in the main body of the business plan.

Steps To Starting Palm Oil Business

1. Palm Tree Plantation

Palm tree plantation is capital intensive and it requires patience. If you want to start earning from palm oil business immediately, this may not be the best option for you.

In this type of palm oil business, you will need to acquire a large expanse of land. Importantly, the soil must be tested to be sure it is appropriate for palm tree plantation. The land and type of soil used in planting and cultivating the palm affect the quality of the fruits.

The location of the land is also important for easy access to customers. The incubation period after plantation of the palm trees can take five to ten years before harvesting. After harvesting, you can either sell the palm oil kernel seeds to those processing it or you set up a mill to extract the palm oil.

To plant, you will have to buy seedlings. Usually, one seedling in Nigeria costs N150 and you will need at least 1000 seedlings for a start. Importantly, ensure you give at least 8-9 meters space between two plants.

2. Set Up A Palm Oil Extraction Mill

The second type of palm oil business is the setting up of palm oil extraction mill. This is also capital intensive but not as expensive as palm tree plantation. All you need to begin is the installation of palm oil milling machines for the processing of the palm oil kernel seeds.

Basically, you can either use the milling machines for personal or commercial processing. You can rent out the machine to people who want to process their palm kernel. You can make cool cash from this business if you are positioned in an environment where the machine is usually needed.

One thing to note however is that palm oil has its season. The peak season is between January to May. So, you may not make so much money during the off-season which is around July to December.

Alternatively, you can install the milling machine for your personal use, process the palm oil kernel, and sell the palm oil to consumers or resellers.

To process for yourself, you need to purchase the palm kernel in large quantities from harvesters and process them into palm oil in your mill, then sell to retailers.

Step Seven: Source For Customers

As a matter of fact, it is better to source for your would-be retailers before buying or processing your palm oil. This will give you a ready market when you are ready to sell.

You can find retailers amongst market sellers, cosmetologists, housewives, etc. To attract a larger customer base, you can explore other modes of marketing such as:

  • Online marketing (social media, google ad, etc)
  • Referral marketing

  • Word of mouth
  • Collaboration/Partnership

If you are considering exportation, one of the trusted places to find international buyers is Alibaba.com, a website known for connecting suppliers or manufacturers with buyers. Vconnect is equally a good place to try.

  • High transportation costs and poor road networks, particularly in rural areas.
  • Poor pricing and value-sharing systems, which often result in farmers receiving low prices for their produce.

Addressing these challenges will require a concerted effort from all stakeholders, including government, industry players, and farmers themselves.

Hi Adesiyan,

If you have a farmland, anywhere from 600,000 Naira will be helpful for a start to understand the terrain, but may reap no real results.

Starting anything ultimately depends on the scale you intend to run it at.

Thanks for the oil ideas,I really love this business,I wish to start up soon but don’t have a huge capital on it but I hope 50/100k can give a start for a newbie like me,I appreciate your efforts for us sir

50,000 to 100,000 wouldn’t help you startup your business right. You’d need considerably more for any visible or positive return on investment.

But thank you for the kind words and have a great time!

hi Stan, I have a great idea about the lot. My main problem is where to get the machines from stripper to kernel separator. I have visited some local fabricators But not satisfied with what I saw. The best machineries currently are imported.

How to start palm oil business in nigeria.

palm oil business proposal in nigeria

Are you thinking of starting a palm oil business or palm oil supply business in Nigeria and you do not know how you can go about it? Perhaps, you want to go into the business as a retailer or wholesaler and you need a step-by-step guide.

Read this article to the end. In this article, I am going to explain everything you need to know about the palm oil business, the farming aspect, the capital needed in starting, how profitable the farming business is, which states in Nigeria you can buy your palm oil wholesale, and finally how you can make profits from the business.

We all think that palm oil is gotten from oil palm trees however, it is processed before the oil can be extracted and used. There are many local palm oil producers in Nigeria. In fact, there are states who specialize in the production of these red oils but proper distribution and sales are the problem.

With what I have seen so far I have discovered that many producers usually have the problem of attracting wholesalers and retailers have the problem of retaining customers . I will be explaining how you can successfully beat this challenge at the end of the article.

Is Palm Oil Business Profitable?

Palm oil business is a profitable business in Nigeria for many reasons. It is a lucrative business because red oil can not be replaced with any other kind of oil. For example, Vegetable oil or groundnut oil can be replaced with other oils like olive oil, granola oil, coconut oil, and soya oil.

However, palm oil is unique and cannot be replaced. Apart from the fact that the oil is irreplaceable the oil also contains unique nutrients. It contains nutrients like vitamin E rich in antioxidants. Palm oil also contains vitamin A, a vitamin that prevents blindness.

Palm oil is also a very important ingredient in making some foods and cosmetics products.

Capital Needed to Start Palm Oil Business

Capital is very important in this business and I am sure that is why you want to know how much it cost to start this business. The capital needed to start a palm oil business depends. The capital needed to start a palm oil business as a wholesaler is different from the capital needed to start a business as a retailer.

It will cost you more to start as a wholesaler than as a retailer. You need a capital of #500,000 to start a palm oil business as a wholesaler and you will need a capital of #200,000 to start as a retailer.

Here are the steps to starting a palm oil business in Nigeria.

1. Write a Business Plan

The first step to starting a lucrative palm oil business is to write a palm oil business plan . The business can encompass the farming and production of palm oil. This is if you have an oil palm plantation whether by inheritance or perhaps you bought one.

And if you do not own a plantation the business plan can just be about the oil palm business alone (the buying and selling of palm oil). Writing a business plan is very important in this business especially if you are planning to go into the business on a large scale.

And lastly, your oil palm business plan will guide you on how you can make profits from your palm oil business. If you are really interested in the business plan and you need a professional to help you out on it you can reach out to me. If the palm oil business you are going into is not a large scale you can then conduct a market survey instead of a business plan.

2. Choose Palm Oil Business to start

There are different types of palm oil business in Nigeria. You can go into the business as a farmer where you have an oil plantation and you harvest and produce your palm oil (palm oil production) or you can be a palm oil wholesaler or lastly a palm oil retailer or palm oil supply business.

So you can choose one of the types of business depending on the capital available to you and the type that is more easier for you. You can also go into the palm oil business as an exporter.

3. Get the Capital Needed

It is always better to get your capital sorted out before you even think of starting this business and you need to avoid borrowing whether from a bank or from family and friends. You can always save to achieve the amount of capital you need. This saving might take 6 months, 1 year, or 2 years.

It depends on how much you earn. Read our article on how to get funding for your business in Nigeria

4. Buy the Equipment Needed

You need some equipment to make your palm oil business profitable. These pieces of equipment are kegs of different sizes, funnels, hoses, and others. You need to buy this equipment although most of the time when you buy your palm oil you buy it with your kegs. However, you will need more kegs to sell these palm oil to your customers.

5. Get a Store or Shop to Sell Oil

As a wholesaler, you need a store for your palm oil business and as a retailer, you need a shop. There are so many things you need to consider when getting a shop or store for your palm oil business lucrative. You need to consider the location of your shop.

When your shop is located at a place where people can easily notice you it will be easy for you to attract customers. You need to consider the size of your shop too – making sure that the shop size is big enough to contain your kegs of oil. Lastly, you need to consider the rent of the shop.

If you want to become a palm oil wholesaler and you cannot afford a store you can store your palm oils at home and sell from home. Note that palm oil products are sensitive. Where you keep them and how you keep them matters.

You need to put them in a cool environment and not expose them to heat or sun. Shipping crates can be placed on the floor of your shop or store before you put your palm oil kegs to maintain the quality.

6. Buy Wholesale Palm Oil and Start Selling

When you have done all this. Then it is time to buy your palm oil and start selling. To buy your palm oil wholesale you can purchase them from palm oil-producing states like Ondo, Imo, Enugu, Delta, Cross River, Ogun, Abia, Oyo, and Bayelsa.

But the most common state many palm oil sellers buy their oil from is Ondo state. You can purchase your oil and get them delivered to your shop or store. When your palm oil gets delivered you can start selling them. To start off you can sell to your family and friends and as time goes by start selling to market women in your area.

7. Profits in Palm Oil Business

There are different ways you can make money from your red oil business in Nigeria you do not have to restrict yourself to the patronage of family and friends.

1. You can advertise and sell your red oil online on popular e-commerce websites in Nigeria . When customers order you can then deliver these oils to their doorsteps.

2. You can sell your red oil to market women. When you give them better offers they will leave their buyers and buy from you.

3. You can brand these palm oil and sell them to supermarkets around you.

4. Lastly, you can export agricultural products . Yes, there are foreign countries that need palm oil to produce cosmetics. This option is majorly for wholesalers or manufacturers.

Palm oil is a lucrative business. You just need to look at what other sellers are not doing and filling up the space. If your red oil is good customers will always approach you. You can also go into branding. This will make you stand out from other red oil sellers in Nigeria . Special packaging, brand name, and other things you do can go a long way.

The Beginner’s Guide To Palm Oil Business In Nigeria

Palm oil, a versatile and widely-used commodity, plays a significant role in various industries, from food to cosmetics and biofuels. Nigeria, with its abundant natural resources and favorable climate, has emerged as a major player in the global palm oil market. In this blog post, we will delve into the palm oil business in Nigeria, exploring its history, current status, challenges, and the path to a sustainable and thriving future.

Table of Contents

Historical Perspective: Introduction

The palm oil industry has deep roots in Nigeria, dating back centuries. Indigenous communities have been cultivating oil palm trees for generations, using the oil for both culinary and cultural purposes. However, it wasn’t until the colonial era that palm oil became a prominent export commodity. The demand for palm oil grew exponentially, shaping Nigeria’s economic landscape and leading to the establishment of large-scale plantations.

Current Status and Importance

Nigeria is one of the world’s largest producers of palm oil, with vast plantations in states like Edo, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom. The palm oil industry contributes significantly to the country’s economy, providing employment for millions of people, especially in rural areas. The oil extracted from palm fruit is a staple in Nigerian cuisine and finds its way into various consumer products globally.

Challenges Faced by the Industry

While the palm oil industry in Nigeria holds immense potential, it is not without its challenges:

Deforestation and Environmental Concerns:

The expansion of palm oil plantations has often led to deforestation, resulting in loss of biodiversity and contributing to climate change. The unsustainable practices associated with land clearing have raised environmental concerns both locally and internationally.

Lack of Modernization:

Many palm oil farmers in Nigeria still rely on traditional, labor-intensive methods. The lack of modernization hinders productivity and efficiency, limiting the industry’s growth potential.

Quality Control and Infrastructure:

Ensuring consistent quality and standards in palm oil production remains a challenge. Poor transportation and processing facilities can impact the quality of the final product.

Market Access and Price Fluctuations:

The industry’s dependence on international markets makes it vulnerable to price fluctuations. Limited access to global markets can also hinder growth and profitability.

Towards Sustainability

To ensure the long-term success of the palm oil industry in Nigeria, sustainable practices are crucial:

Responsible Farming:

Encouraging sustainable farming practices that prioritize biodiversity conservation, reduce deforestation, and promote organic cultivation can mitigate environmental concerns.

Technology Adoption:

The adoption of modern farming techniques, such as improved planting materials and efficient processing methods, can enhance productivity and product quality.

Value Addition:

Investing in downstream processing, such as refining and producing higher-value products like specialty oils and biofuels, can increase the industry’s profitability.

Community Engagement:

Involving local communities in decision-making processes and providing them with fair compensation can foster social sustainability and strengthen the industry’s roots.

Certification and Standards:

Obtaining certifications such as RSPO (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil) can enhance the industry’s reputation and access to global markets.

How Much Can I Use To Start Palm Oil Business?

The amount of capital required to start a palm oil business can vary significantly depending on several factors, including the scale of your operation, the location, the specific activities you plan to undertake (such as farming, processing, or distribution), and the level of technology and infrastructure you intend to use. Here is a rough breakdown of potential expenses to consider:

Land Acquisition:

If you plan to start a palm oil plantation, the cost of purchasing or leasing land will be a significant expense. The size of the land and its location will play a crucial role in determining this cost.

Planting and Cultivation:

The cost of planting oil palm trees, including the purchase of seedlings or young plants, labor for planting, and maintenance during the early growth stages.

Infrastructure:

This includes costs related to building facilities such as processing mills, storage units, and equipment like threshers, boilers, and presses.

Labor Costs:

Labor is a significant expense, especially if you’re running a plantation or processing facility. Costs can include wages for farm workers, machine operators, and administrative staff.

Processing Equipment:

If you plan to process palm oil, you’ll need equipment such as sterilizers, digester tanks, screw presses, and separators. The cost will depend on the scale of your processing operation.

Transportation:

Transportation costs are relevant if you need to move palm fruit from the plantation to the processing facility or the final product to distribution points.

Quality Control and Certification:

Obtaining certifications like RSPO or meeting quality standards may involve additional costs, including documentation, audits, and necessary upgrades.

Marketing and Distribution:

Budget for marketing activities and distribution costs to get your products to customers.

Regulatory and Legal Fees:

Expenses related to permits, licenses, and compliance with regulations.

Miscellaneous Costs:

These could include initial working capital, unexpected expenses, and insurance.

It’s important to conduct thorough research and create a detailed business plan to estimate your specific startup costs accurately. You might also consider seeking advice from industry experts or consulting existing palm oil business owners to get a better understanding of the investment required for your chosen business model.

Keep in mind that the palm oil industry has both risks and potential rewards. Careful financial planning, sustainable practices, and a thorough understanding of the industry dynamics are essential for a successful and profitable venture.

Opportunities In Palm Oil Business

The palm oil business presents a range of opportunities for entrepreneurs and investors. While challenges exist, there are numerous areas within the industry where you can find potential for growth and profitability.

Here are some opportunities to consider:

Palm Oil Plantation and Farming:

  • Establishing and managing a palm oil plantation can be a lucrative venture. The demand for palm oil remains high both locally and internationally.
  • Cultivation of improved palm oil varieties that offer higher yields and better disease resistance can lead to increased productivity.
  • Sustainable farming practices, such as intercropping or agroforestry, can maximize land usage and contribute to environmental conservation.

Palm Oil Processing:

  • Setting up a palm oil processing mill to extract oil from harvested fruits can be a profitable endeavor.
  • Value addition through refining, fractionation, and production of specialty oils for various industries can enhance profitability.
  • Investing in modern processing technology can improve efficiency and product quality.

Distribution and Marketing:

  • Establishing a distribution network to connect producers with consumers can be a lucrative opportunity.
  • Branding and marketing your palm oil products can help differentiate your business and attract a loyal customer base.

Bioproducts and Biofuels:

  • The palm oil industry produces byproducts like palm kernel cake and palm kernel oil, which can be used in animal feed and various industrial applications.
  • The production of biodiesel from palm oil offers an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional fossil fuels.

Research and Development:

  • There is a continuous need for research and innovation in the palm oil sector. Developing new varieties with improved traits, refining processing techniques, and finding sustainable solutions are areas of opportunity.

Sustainability Initiatives:

  • The growing emphasis on sustainable practices presents opportunities for businesses that adopt environmentally friendly and socially responsible approaches to palm oil production.
  • Developing products that meet certified sustainability standards like RSPO can open doors to international markets.

Technology Solutions:

  • Creating or offering technology solutions for efficient plantation management, monitoring, and yield prediction can streamline operations and enhance productivity.
  • Digital platforms for connecting farmers, processors, and buyers can improve transparency and efficiency in the supply chain.

Small-Scale Processing Units:

  • Establishing small-scale processing units in rural areas can provide local farmers with access to processing facilities, reducing post-harvest losses and adding value to their produce.

Export Opportunities:

  • Nigeria’s position as a significant palm oil producer offers opportunities for export to other countries with palm oil deficits.
  • Exploring international trade agreements and building relationships with buyers can create avenues for growth.

Investing in Research and Training:

  • Training programs for farmers on modern cultivation techniques and sustainable practices can be a valuable service.
  • Investing in research to develop disease-resistant varieties or innovative production methods can lead to breakthroughs.

As with any business, thorough market research, a solid business plan, and a clear understanding of the industry’s dynamics are crucial to identifying and capitalizing on the right opportunities. The palm oil industry, with its multifaceted value chain, offers a diverse range of avenues for growth and success.

The palm oil industry in Nigeria stands at a crossroads, facing both challenges and opportunities. With a rich history and a potential for growth, it is imperative to navigate the path towards sustainability.

By adopting responsible practices, embracing modern technology, and ensuring fair economic and environmental stewardship, Nigeria’s palm oil industry can continue to thrive, contributing to the country’s economic development while preserving its natural heritage for generations to come.

Nigeria is the largest consumer of palm oil in Africa with a population of 197 million people (World Bank, 2018). The nation consumed approximately 3 million MT of fats and oils in 2018, with palm oil accounting for 44.7% or 1.34 million MT. In the same period, production stood at 1.02 million MT resulting to supply shortfall of 0.32 million MT (excluding possible impact of palm oil exports).

In the early 1960s, Nigeria was the world's largest palm oil producer with global market share of 43%. Today, it is the 5th largest producer with less than 2% of total global market production of 74.08 million MT. In 1966, Malaysia and Indonesia surpassed Nigeria as the world's largest palm oil producers.

Since then, both countries combined produce approximately 80% of total global output, with Indonesia alone responsible for over half i.e. 53.3% of global output. According to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), if Nigeria had maintained its market dominance in the palm oil industry, the country would have been earning approximately $20 billion annually from cultivation and processing of palm oil as at today.

Palm oil business in Nigeria: Opportunities, risks, where to buy it cheap and more

palm oil business proposal in nigeria

Want to start a palm oil business in Nigeria? No problem. When you’re done reading this article, you will know what to do to make your business successful.

There was a time when the palm oil business was Nigeria’s major source of revenue. This was in the colonial era when the British government depended on palm oil as the main source of revenue, especially in the then-Eastern region. Today, crude oil has taken over, relegating palm oil to one of the businesses of local people. However, it is still a profitable business as many Nigerians are patronising more local produce because foreign-made become more expensive, thanks to the crippling exchange rates between naira and US dollars. You, too, can take advantage and join the business.

What is palm oil business?

Palm oil business is investing a huge amount of money in buying and selling palm oil. Investors buy palm oil in bulk, store them in large quantities and sell it off when the supply of palm oil has reduced. The reason why sellers sell palm oil when production has reduced is to make a higher profit. It’s simple economics, the higher the lower the supply, the higher the demand, which means the higher the profit that will be made.

Palm oil business in Nigeria

Nigeria is the world’s fifth-largest palm oil producer, with less than two percent market share producing 1.03 million metric tonnes. This means the country has depended more on imported palm oil from countries like Malaysia and Indonesia to meet the demands of the teeming population.

Palm oil is an essential commodity in Nigeria. This produce has many uses, such as cooking, medicine, cosmetic uses, animal feed, and preservation of items, especially other food produce. Despite the fact that crude oil has taken over as the main source of revenue for Nigeria since its discovery in the 1950s, palm oil remains a very profitable business in the country. As long as Nigerians exist, palm oil will continue to be in great demand and supply.

According to  Nairametrics , palm oil prices have reached record highs in 2022, driven primarily by the disruption in the sunflower oil market caused by the Russia-Ukraine war and export restrictions imposed by the Indonesian government. In fact, global supply issues and high prices have pushed Nigeria to reduce imports and focus more on local production. The high prices have produced more consumers, forcing the government to encourage local producers to meet the supply gap.

The publication also confirmed that palm oil cultivation in Nigeria is carried out on over 3.0 million hectares of land and is dominated by small-scale farmers (roughly 80% share). Hence there are a lot of opportunities Nigerian palm oil market amid a growing population. Even the Nigerian government has encouraged local production  through tariffs and low-cost loans to farmers.

There’s no better time to invest in palm oil business than now. Nigerians are now looking inwards to consuming produce made in the country because they’re cheaper and of better quality. Previously, most Nigerians preferred to consume imported goods rather than locally produced ones. Local businesses suffered. But now, things are beginning to change in favour of local producers, thanks to the exorbitantly high naira rate to US dollars in the exchange market.

There’s no money flowing in the country, and everybody has learned to cut their clothes according to their size. No more “I can’t use Nigerian products” or “Nigerian made are too local.” So far, Presco and Okomu are among the largest Nigerian palm oil producers in the private sector of the palm oil business, and more businesses are expected to be established in the nearest future.

How much do I need to start palm oil business in Nigeria?

The capital for a palm oil business depends on if you want to be a wholesaler or retailer. It will cost you more if you want to do wholesale business than retail. As a wholesaler, you will need a capital of at least N500,000 (five hundred thousand naira). You will need about N200,000 (two hundred thousand naira) as a retailer. Note that it all depends on the business scale you intend to start.

Opportunities in palm oil business

Palm oil is the most widely consumed vegetable oil in the world. It is especially consumed in Nigeria, which also boasts the world’s largest black population. This means the demand is always more than the local supply, which makes it a great opportunity for investors and entrepreneurs in the industry. Apart from cooking, palm oil is used for medicinal purposes, animal food production, cosmetics, and the production of other foods for consumption and preservation. So you see, the market is huge.

There are three main types of palm oil business opportunities you can invest in:

Palm tree Plantation

Set up a palm oil extraction mill, sales/trading of palm oil.

You can do all three if you have the capital. Let’s take a look at how each of the three businesses works.

Palm tree Plantation

This is a highly capital-intensive business that will require a lot of patience. First, you need to acquire fertile land to plant palm trees. You must also make sure to test the land for the quality of the soil. After planting, you have to wait years for them to grow and produce palm fruits.  It can take up to 5 years before harvesting, after which you either sell the palm fruit to those processing it or set up a milling factory to extract the oil yourself. Don’t forget to buy the right seedlings for your plantation from the right sources.

Set up a palm oil extraction mill

Like in tree plantation, setting up a palm oil mill requires a lot of capital. You need money to purchase and install palm oil milling machines to process the palm kernel seeds. The best part is that you can use the mill for personal use or charge people who want to mill their palm kernels for commercial purposes. You can also rent out the machines and make profit off them. That’s not all. You can go big by buying palm kernels in large quantities and processing them in your mill to resell to wholesalers and consumers.

Sales/trading of palm oil

Most people prefer this business because it’s cheaper and faster to make profit. Here, you can buy palm oil in large quantities and resell them for a higher price. Typically, you have to store your stock for a while before selling when the production of palm oil declines. That way, you make a higher profit from the business.

Risk in palm oil business in Nigeria

  • Cases of land grabbing and disputes discourage investors from buying palm tree plantations.
  • Most producers are farmers who use local and substandard tools to produce palm oil.
  • Poor quality of locally produced palm oil due to poor facilities. Thus palm oil cannot be competitive in the international market.
  • Bad government policies.
  • Poor attitude towards work. Palm oil production is physically intensive in Nigeria. Most Nigerians, especially the youths, prefer white-collar jobs.
  • Unequal distribution as most palm oil producers process for their own immediate needs. So a seller has to take extra measures to source palm oil for sale.
  • Poor storage facilities result in post-harvest losses.
  • Inadequate credit facilities where the government has failed to give loans to farmers with little or no interest to encourage production. However, this present Mohammadu Buhari administration has taken steps to address that, as cited above. However, more should be done to encourage people to go into palm oil business, from farming to trading.

How to Start Palm Oil Business in Nigeria and Earn ₦3m Monthly

Photo of Saint Chinedu

Palm oil business is very profitable in Nigeria because many people use palm oil both domestically and industrially.

The oil palm ( Elaeis guineensis ) is one of the important economic crops in the tropics.

It belongs to the family palmae , and the subfamily cocoideae of which it is the most important member.

The oil palm is a versatile tree crop with almost all parts of the tree being useful and of economic value.

The principal product of oil palm is the palm fruit, which is processed to get three commercial products.

These include palm oil, palm kernel oil and palm kernel cake.

The uses of palm oil are many and varied.

Locally, it is used for cooking, soap making, metal plating and lamp oil.

The palm kernel oil, however, is used for soap making, as a source of glycerine, for manufacturing margarine, cooking fats and for making lubricants.

The residue got after extraction of oil is called kernel cake, which is useful in livestock feed production.

The midribs and rachis of oil palm are used for making brooms and roofing materials.

The thicker leaf stalk is used for making the walls of village huts.

The bark of the frond is peeled and woven into baskets while the trunk (main stem) can be split and used as supporting frames in buildings.

A sap tapped from the male flower is drunk as palm wine, which is a source of yeast.

The spent fruit bunch and fibre that remains after oil extraction can be used for mulching, as manure and as fuel.

Steps to Starting Palm Oil Business in Nigeria

Here are the steps to start a profitable palm oil business in Nigeria:

1. Choose the Palm Oil Business Type to Invest in

(a) Palm Tree Plantation

The capital requirement for planting palm trees runs into millions of naira.

If you want to earn from palm oil business fast, this may not be the best option for you.

It requires the purchase of acres of land.

The land and type of soil used in planting and cultivating the palm affect the quality of the fruits and must be tested to be sure it is appropriate for palm tree plantation.

The incubation period after plantation of the palm trees can take five to ten years before harvesting.

To plant, buy seedlings.

Usually, one seedling in Nigeria costs ₦250 and you will need at least 1000 seedlings for a start.

Importantly, ensure you give at least 8-9 meters space between two plants.

After harvesting, you can either sell the palm oil kernel seeds to those processing it or you set up a mill to extract the palm oil.

(b) Palm Oil Extraction Mill Setup

Setting up of palm oil extraction mill is also capital intensive but not as expensive as the palm tree plantation.

To begin, install palm oil milling machines for the processing of the palm oil kernel seeds.

  • Use milling machines for personal or commercial processing.
  • Rent out the machine to people who want to process their palm kernel.
  • Earn cool cash from this business if you are positioned in an environment where the machine is usually needed.

Note the palm oil season.

The peak season is between January to May.

Alternatively, you can install the milling machine for your personal use, process the palm oil kernel, and sell the palm oil to consumers or resellers.

To process for yourself, you need to purchase the palm kernel in large quantities from harvesters and process them into palm oil in your mill, then sell to retailers.

(c) Palm Oil Supply and Storage

If you have capital, this is the cheapest and easiest part of the business for you.

However, you need to be patient to make a good profit from this business.

This involves buying palm oil in large quantities and selling to consumers during the off-peak period, when the supply to the market has reduced.

To get more profit from this business, store the palm oil in a cool place for months, then sell them during off pick period when the supply of palm oil has reduced, and demand is high.

2. Fully Understand Palm Oil Trade (Market Research)

To start and successfully scale a palm oil business in Nigeria, you must have in-depth knowledge of how it works.

Before starting, you must know the answers to these questions:

  • How does the business works?
  • Is it time-consuming?
  • Where do I source for cheap and good palm oil?
  • Can I store palm oil for at least a year without it losing its taste?
  • Who are some of the top palm oil traders and companies in Nigeria?
  • How do they operate and serve their customers?

You also need to know your competitors and the existing price of palm oil before starting the business.

The best ways you can get a better understanding of palm oil business in Nigeria and succeed without making costly mistakes is by undergoing mentorship under a proven palm trader or company and by reading from detailed guides online.

After carrying out market research, the report you have made will point out the right amount of capital to start the business.

3. Have a Business Plan

To make your business work, sit down and draft out a realistic plan.

A business plan is a formal statement of business goals, reasons they are attainable, and plans for reaching them.

Your business plan will state:

  • The name of your business venture.
  • The states you are selling to and countries for export.
  • Palm oil business potentialities and risks.

4. Business Registration

Register your business name with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) in Nigeria.

This is done to legalize your business and avoid any legal issues that might come up.

With your CAC certificate, you can open a corporate bank account where customers can pay into.

Doing this will also make you appear more reputable to your customers.

To begin registration, run a name search on CAC’s portal to confirm if your chosen name has not been registered by another person.

With basic information like valid ID card, passport photograph, signature, and personal details, you are good to go.

Alternatively, you can hire a lawyer to help you register it.

5. Source for Palm Oil from Reliable Suppliers

In case you are not the one producing the palm oil, you will need to have a solid arrangement with suppliers you can purchase from.

You can get palm oil cheaply during a peak period from places like Delta State, Bayelsa State, Imo State, Rivers State, Abia State, Akwa Ibom, Ondo State, Edo State and Rivers State.

It is very important to buy palm oil of good quality as this would make it easier for you to get customers to sell to.

6. Decide on the Mode of Transportation

If you don’t know the right mode of transportation to use in transporting your palm oil, you may end up incurring huge costs that will affect your profit.

So, compare prices with several commercial carriers before settling for one.

Ask your supplier to suggest the cheapest, reliable, and safest mode of transportation to you from experience.

If you have your own vehicle, then that’s better for continence and reliability.

Otherwise, you’ll need trusted drivers to deliver palm oil to your customers all over the country.

7. Get a Storage Space (Room)

Know and learn how to preserve palm oil.

You need a place to store your goods in wait for the off-peak period; somewhere cool, dry, and safe.

The storage space (warehouse) must be spacious, cool, safe, and dry for the storage of palm oil.

Rent a space or a room where you can store the palm oil while you wait for the right time to sell.

Purchase kegs or drums to store your oil, preferably the 25-liter yellow kegs.

Also, the kegs for storing the oil must be arranged.

8. Set Right Prices for Your Products

You must learn how to fix the right prices for your products if you don’t want to make a loss from your business.

To put the right price on your product, calculate all expenses, do market research and analysis on how much palm oil is being sold, how many consumers will pay, and the rate of demand of the product.

These details will help you price your product correctly.

9. Look for Customers

Customers are the most important part of a business.

Without customers, your business will not thrive.

Wait for the off-peak period, which starts in July. Take active measures to look for customers and sell your palm oil to.

You can find some retailers among market sellers, stay-at-home parent, food companies, cosmetologists.

Use a unique container to bottle your palm oil, make it appealing by placing a label on it.

Alternatively, you can market your business online to reach a wider audience.

10. Locate Genuine Foreign Buyers for Your Palm Oil

Sourcing for buyers can be tasking, especially if you are new in the business.

Quality palm oil is in high demand by Nigerians based abroad.

Locate these Nigerians or create a means through which these commodities can reach them.

Here are some tips on how to get genuine buyers abroad:

  • Join your local seller association and cooperative society for the palm oil you want to export.
  • Join online trade hubs companies that have the directories of both buyers and sellers. Though it will cost you a subscription fee. It may be yearly or monthly.
  • You can contact the embassies of the countries you are exporting to, in your country of residence, to confirm the legitimacy of the buyer’s details.
  • Search on the internet for companies that use that product as a raw material. Send mail and put the call through for better communication.
  • Join B2B (Business to Business) and B2C (Business to Customers) forums and portals to connect with buyers.
  • Join some social networks like Facebook, twitter, LinkedIn pages to connect with buyers.
  • You can advertise on some trade portal websites for availability of the products and services for sales.
  • When you have one buyer, encourage that one to put word across to other Nigerians, Africans, and Foreigners around.

11. Arrange for Palm Oil Export Logistics

As a palm oil trader, you need to have some knowledge of palm oil logistics.

If you are too occupied with doing this yourself, contact a reliable company to do this.

Your products are expected to be packaged and labeled correctly to prevent damage and misplacement on transit.

Document them and insure against losses.

Inspection of the product by an authorized body, such as FIIRO, Nigerian customs, and NDLEA, is also vital.

Know and have the basic documents required for exporting goods which are: certificate of origin, insurance certificate, shipping bill, certificate of inspection, palm oil license, commercial receipt, packing list.

Before you have the goods shipped out, confirm with your contact where the commodities should be shipped to.

If for any reason, you do not document your palm oil process with required government agencies, then it can be termed smuggling and you’ll be punished if caught along the line.

Where Can I Get Palm Seedlings for Planting?

You can get palm seedlings from the seed pods of flowering palms or purchase them from the market.

These palm seeds vary in size.

Some can be small and bright red, while others can be quite large.

If you prefer to get your seeds from your tree, it is better to get them immediately when they fall from the tree.

Also, use these seeds on time because some of them have a short lifespan.

You must test your palm seeds before you plant them.

This determines if it would germinate or not.

Just simply put the seed in a bowl of warm water.

If the seed floats, it is unsuitable for use.

However, if it sinks in the water, it is suitable for planting.

Price of 25 Liters of Palm Oil in Nigeria

Presently in Nigeria, you can buy 25 liters of local palm oil at a price of ₦35,000 per 1 keg.

This is when you would buy your palm oil in large quantities in wait for the off-peak period.

During Peak Periods, you could get a 25-liter keg of palm oil for as low ₦4,000 which could be sold for as much as ₦11,000 between July and January, which is the off-peak season.

(a) Grade 1

This is the best oil which can be stored within 8 months or more.

The oil doesn’t sleep, nor is it harsh. From the top to the bottom, it remains the same.

A little shake of the content will make the oil to flow freely; the taste is excellent, has a beautiful fragrance and does not foam at the top.

The colour is most times dark red.

(b) Grade 2

Grade 2 palm oil can be stored for 3-4 months.

The oil is the opposite of grade one; it is choking, sleeps from the top to bottom, etc.

Grade 3 palm oil should be sold immediately or at most within a month. It is used in soap making.

You must make a good use of your nose to distinguish good oil.

Just dip your finger into the oil and smell.

Table of Contents

Steps to Start Palm Oil Business

The palm oil business is very lucrative if done properly. The demand for palm oil is very high, and there are consumers who are willing to buy it. There are basically three types of Palm Oil Businesses, namely:

Palm Tree Plantation

This aspect of the palm oil business requires huge capital investments. It also needs a large area of land. However, the profits of this business are huge, and you’ll make it big once you’re able to acquire at least 4 acres of land.

So, you have to decide what area of land to buy. This business isn’t really ideal for startups because the capital needed runs into millions of naira. Again, the incubation period for palm oil trees can take between 5 and 10 years. So, as a farmer, you have to be patient to make good profits from the business

Once the palm oil tree is due for harvest, you can decide to set up a mill to extract the oil or just sell it out to those who are into full-time palm oil kernel processing.

Palm Oil Mill

This is another lucrative aspect of the palm oil business. It requires a huge capital investment to purchase the milling machines. You can decide to fabricate one locally or simply import one from China’s foremost online retailer, Alibaba. Generally, there are two ways of processing palm kernel seeds and they include:

Commercial Processing: This involves processing other people’s palm kernel seeds for money. It is a lucrative business, as the cost of getting a palm oil milling machine is expensive. It is a good business because you’ll make a huge ROI after a few months. The only expense you’ll have to pay is the constant servicing of the milling machine. During the palm oil season, which is between January and May, customers are always available to process their palm kernel seeds. But during the offseason, the business is fairly stable.

Personal Use: As the name implies, this involves the owner of the milling machine buying palm kernel seeds from different farmers in very large quantities and processing them in order to sell them to end users. In this category of the palm oil business, you need to set up your milling machine in a location that is easily accessible to farmers and close to the target market.

Bulk Trading of Palm Oil

This involves investing a huge amount of money in buying and selling palm oil. In this business, investors buy palm oil in bulk, store it in large quantities, and sell it off when the supply of palm oil has reduced. During this period, traders bring out their stocks, sell them, and make a reasonable profit. If you have the capital, this business is ideal for you. However, you need to be patient to make a good profit from this business. Let’s do a quick profit analysis of this business. Imagine buying 20 kegs of palm oil for N500,000 at N25,000 per keg and selling them off to retailers for N30,000 within 3 days, depending on your customer base. Depending on the source and quality of the palm oil, you can get it at a much cheaper rate.

The necessary steps you need to take before starting this business

Market research

Proper research into the palm oil business is necessary if you are to succeed in it. Apart from market research, it is also important to understand the nature of the business. The nature of the business should answer questions such as, “Is it time-consuming?” Where can I source cheap palm oil? Can I store palm oil for at least a year without it losing its taste? Once you’re able to provide answers to these questions, you’re halfway done. You also need to know your competitors and the existing price of palm oil before delving into the business.

Capital Investment

After carrying out market research, the report you have made will point out the right amount of capital to start the business. The amount of capital should be enough to cover the following expenses:

  • Working Capital: this is the amount of money needed to buy wholesale palm oil from farmers. This working capital also includes transportation costs.
  • Building Capital: this is the capital needed to rent or build a warehouse to store the already purchased palm oil
  • Storage Capital: it is the capital needed for the proper storage of palm oil. You need to invest in the security of your warehouse and also purchase jerry cans or kegs to store your palm oil.

Get Contacts

If you must succeed in this business, you need to get the contacts of suppliers from different states. You can compile a list of suppliers in a spreadsheet (using Microsoft Excel). It is necessary to know how reliable these suppliers are, the quality of palm oil they need, and the prices they offer.

Mode of Transportation

This is another important investment you have to make. If you have the money to get your own vehicle, then that’s alright; otherwise, you’ll need trusted drivers to deliver palm oil to your customers all over the country.

Exporting Palm Oil

If you’re planning to export palm oil to other countries, then you should consider searching online. Alibaba is a great site to list your palm oil for sale, or you can use Vconnect to search for reliable exporters online. You should do a proper background check before giving your palm oil out for export.

Nigeria, Malaysia to sign MoU over palm biomass industry

Deborah Dan-Awoh

The National Palm Produce Association of Nigeria (NPPAN) has announced that the Federal Government is poised to sign a pivotal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Malaysian Government marking a significant stride in the development of palm biomass in Nigeria.

Amb. Alphosus Inyang, the President of NPPAN, shared this information during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

Biomass is agricultural waste, representing an untapped resource with vast economic potential. The focus is on transforming this waste into wealth. NPPAN is strategically collaborating with its Malaysian counterparts to replicate the success of Malaysia’s palm biomass industry in Nigeria.

Inyang highlighted the immense economic impact that the development of palm biomass could bring to Nigeria. Projections include a potential $10 billion contribution to the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP) within four years, coupled with the generation of over five million jobs in five years.

He emphasised Nigeria’s substantial annual generation of agricultural waste and emphasized that the MoU would enable the country to harness these waste materials for various industrial purposes.

What you should know

The potential applications of palm biomass are diverse and include the production of industrial goods, electricity generation, medicine, fertilizer, and more.

  • Inyang drew attention to the environmental benefits, citing the potential for carbon credit gains, forest preservation, conservation efforts, and job creation.
  • He emphasized that the palm tree, with its 90% biomass and 10% palm oil composition, presents a largely unexplored resource in Nigeria.
