FOR PARENTS AND TEACHERS
An exciting Going to the Zoo EFL ESL lesson plan

Little kids love learning about animals. It’s also really fun to teach about different animals and their sounds and actions. This is a Going to the Zoo EFL ESL lesson plan for preschool children. We’re going to learn all about different animals that you can see on a visit to the zoo. What can you see? What can the elephant do? The lesson will last about one hour and we’ll end with a fun and easy craft activity to make an animal. Get ready! We’re going to the zoo!
For this Going to the Zoo EFL ESL Lesson plan, you will need:
- Animal flashcards: make your own or use something like this
- Coloring pens, paper, scissors and glue
- Cardboard toilet rolls or card
Going to the Zoo songs and videos:
- Who’s in the Zoo? by The Kiboomers
- Let’s Go to the Zoo by Super Simple Songs
Introduction
Start the lesson with your usual Hello routine or use one of my favorite Hello songs . Then start drawing some animals on the board and ask the children what they are and if they know where you will be going today. If they don’t guess, tell them you are going to the zoo. Then sing the Who’s in the Zoo song together. What other animals can they think of that you might see at the zoo?
Meet the zoo animals
Using a mystery bag or box , pull out your flashcards and learn the names of the different animals. Don’t forget to use lots of actions and TPR to help the children remember the names of the animals. Then play a What’s Missing game: take one card away and put the others on the board or the table and let the class guess which animal is missing.
Let’s go to the zoo!
It’s time to go to the zoo and see what the animals are doing. Sing the song together and do the actions for each animal. Then ask the class, “What can you see?” and do the actions for one animal. Let them reply, “I can see a …..”. Once they’ve got the hang of this, choose one of them to do the actions and let the class ask another child what they can see. Let everyone have a turn.
What can you see?
Put the kids in pairs in a line or in a circle and give everyone an animal flashcard. Practice asking the question and replying so you are sure everyone is clear. Then let them work in their pairs asking each other the question, “What can you see?” “I can see an elephant / a bear/ a tiger etc.” Then change partners.
Zoo animal craft activity
We are going to make very simple cardboard roll zoo animals . Get everybody sitting down and give everyone a cardboard toilet roll and some paper and scissors. Tell the children that they can choose an animal. Show them how to draw, color and cut out the face, paws and tail of their animal. Then help them stick it on to the cardboard roll. While you’re doing this, ask them to tell you what animal it is and show you its actions.
If you’ve still got some time, play the question game again but using your animal models instead of the flashcards. Sing one of the zoo songs again to finish the lesson or choose one of my favorite Goodbye songs . Then send the kids home with their animal models
If you teach this lesson with your class, I’d love to hear how it went so please leave a comment. If you’ve enjoyed this lesson plan and would like to see more, you can see all my lesson plans here . Zoo animals
Children love learning about animals, especially ones which are big, scary, colourful, wild, and potentially dangerous!

Once you have them captivated by the subject you’ll find that they are more than eager to learn the English vocabulary needed to talk about it. There are hundreds of language focus points you can develop when doing topics on zoo animals. Here are just some ideas to get you started.
- Introducing vocabulary for zoo animals – zebras, elephants, hippos, ostriches, tigers, lions, giraffes, monkeys, peacocks, bears, seals, penguins…
- Colours, patterns and colour combinations – stripes, dots, spots, zig zags, multicoloured, black and white…
- Modals – can, can't, must, mustn’t (as piece of vocabulary not as a grammar focus)
- Zoo verbs – buy, touch, feed, listen, watch, eat, run, shout, stroke…
- Map of the world
- Silhouette coloured stickers of zoo animals
- A3 copies of a zoo diagram
- Zoo animals flashcards
- Scarf to blindfold
- Coloured card
Rules at the zoo
Pre-teach verbs such as feed, touch, buy, run, watch, shout, eat, stroke, etc, then brainstorm dos and don’ts at the zoo. Ideas include:
- You can feed the ducks.
- You mustn’t feed the lions.
- You mustn’t touch the elephant.
- You must buy a ticket.
You don’t need to go into the complex difference between all the modals. You can easily demonstrate the difference with how stern or relaxed you look when saying ‘You can feed the ducks’ (raise eyebrows and smile!), ‘You must buy a ticket’ (nod head and wag your finger) ‘You mustn’t feed the lions’ (look horrified, shake head and pull a stern face!).
You can make a class poster of rules. You can also adapt this idea for more advanced pupils and make up opposite, rebel rules such as ‘You must eat lots of ice-cream.’ ‘You must stroke the lion!’ Make sure they understand that these are opposite rules though! To help you explain take the rules you’ve already created and make them into opposites before letting the children use their imaginations!
Design your own zoo
Ask pupils questions such as:
- If they ran the zoo what changes would they make?
- What animal should go where?
- Should the bears go next to the fish?
- Why shouldn’t the snakes be in the same cage as the birds?…
Then draw a simple plan of a zoo with the word zoo written at the bottom, middle of the page on a gate.
- Around the page you can draw several cages.
- Photocopy onto A3 and distribute to small groups or pairs.
- Each pair should have cut outs or stickers of animals that they can move around the page until they are satisfied with their allocation of animals into the cages.
- They should think about noises each animals makes, what they eat, whether they need a very cold cage or a very hot cage etc.
- Make your own before the class and demonstrate your logic before they attempt this quite challenging task.
What do zoo animals eat?
Study the different types of food that zoo animals eat. Part of the fun of going to a zoo is watching the animals being fed. Discover how often they should be fed and what exactly they eat: http://www.littlerockzoo.com/
What noises do they make?
You may find that where you teach the animals make different noises to English ones! This is generally true of farm and domestic animals (cats, dogs, cows, ducks, etc) but see if any zoo animals make different noises. The children will love making the noises to compare to English zoo animal noises.
Where do they come from?
- It’s important to put the animals into their original context and to not just present them as living in zoos.
- You could construct a class map of the world and stick silhouette stickers of zoo animals on the countries they comes from. Have colour codes for different continents.
Colours of the zoo
- Animals and birds such as parrots, pink flamingos, giraffes, lions, zebras etc are a great way of learning new colours and pattern vocabulary such as stripes, dots, zigzags, multicoloured etc. You could draw outlines of the animals for the children to fill in with the correct colours and patterns. Easily adapted to younger learners.
Mother and babies
- See if they can match the mother to the baby. You could do this with picture flashcards or with word flashcards for older children. The following link has a list of animals, their babies and the groups of animals: http://www.enchantedlearning.com/subjects/animals/Animalbabies.shtml
What does a zoo keeper do?
- Help the children understand the role of the zoo keeper. A real zoo keeper explains his job and what is involved in being a zookeeper: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W6DmpQ4S-yA If this video is not available for viewing in your location, please click here
- Sleeping lions – great for the end of a lesson as a calming activity. Everyone has to put their heads in their folded arms on their desks and keep as still as possible. If they move they are out!
- Stick the tail on the elephant - draw a large picture of the back of an elephant. Blindfold the children, gently spin them around and urge them into the direction of the elephant poster holding the tail of the elephant with a piece of Blu tack. Draw a number next to where they put the tail, have a number per pupil and see who’s the closet at the end of the game.

Animals Lesson Plan | ESL Lesson Plan Complete With Fun Games and Activities

Teaching animal vocabulary can be an incredibly fun lesson for young ESL learners. On this page, you will find an ESL lesson plan to teach animal vocabulary to young English language learners. Although the activities are mainly aimed at kids, the activities can be easily adapted for older beginner ESL students.
In this lesson plan, students will learn animal names while practicing the demonstrative pronouns ‘this’ and ‘that’. Students will learn how to ask and answer ‘What’s this/that?’ and ‘Is that a (lion)?’.
First, students will play a fun flashcard game to learn the names of the animals. Next, students will play a fun board game with their partners. And finally, students will watch a video and play an animal guessing game.
All the materials needed for this animals lesson are provided below. For more free materials to teach about animals that are not included in this lesson plan, see the bottom of this page.

Animals Lesson Plan | ESL Lesson Plan for Kids
Introduction and warm-up.
Before introducing keywords and expressions for the lesson, it is important to put the target language into context. A great way to do this is to tell students that you recently visited a zoo. Ask them to guess what animals they think you saw at the zoo and write them on the board. Ask students if they have ever been to the zoo and what animals they saw.
Practice Key Words And Sentences

Next, it’s time to introduce the animal names and key expressions for the lesson. Using these animal flashcards , introduce the animal names to the students. Ask students to repeat after you as you say the animal names aloud. Next, introduce the pronouns ‘this’ and ‘that’ and the expression “This/That is a (lion).”
An easy way to demonstrate the difference between this and that is to simply place the flashcard close to you and say, “This is a lion.” Then move the flashcard away from you and say, “That is a lion.” Ask students to guess what the difference is between this and that.
Once students have practiced enough, it’s time to play a fun animal Pictionary game to practice some more.
Activity 1: Is that a tiger?
In this game to practice animal vocabulary, one student will draw an animal on the board while the other students guess what it is. Before playing this game, teach the students how to ask and answer the question, “Is that a (giraffe)?”
Once students have practiced enough, invite one student up to the front to draw an animal. Show one of the animal flashcards to the student and give them 10 seconds to try to draw the animal. As the student is drawing, encourage the other students to count down from 10 together.
After 10 seconds, choose a student to guess what animal it is. When guessing, students should ask, “Is that a (lion)?” and the student at the front should answer, “Yes, it is.” or “No, it isn’t.” The student who guesses correctly then gets to come to the front and draw the next animal.
Activity 2: Board Game – Race Around The World

This next activity is a fun printable board game for students to play in pairs. Print this animals board game and give one to each pair of students. In this game, students will ‘race around the world’ while naming the animals in the picture. One student will race clockwise, and one student will race anti-clockwise.
To play, students should first place their eraser at the starting point. Next, the kids should play rock, scissors, paper. The winning student can then move their one square.
Then the students should have a dialogue based on the animal picture which is in that square. For example, one student should ask, “What’s that?” and the other student can answer, “It’s an elephant.”.
Next, the students will play rock, scissors, paper again and repeat. The first student to make it all the way around the world is the winner.
Activity 3: Animals Guessing Game
This final activity is one of Games4esl’s popular activity videos. It’s an animals guessing game in which an animal outline is slowly revealed on screen. Students should try to guess what the animal is before the answer is revealed.
To play, simply show the video in class. When students are ready to guess, pause the video. When guessing, students should use the target language from the lesson. For example, “Is that a giraffe?”.
To wrap up the class, review the keywords and expressions and check students’ understanding. A great way to do this is with a ‘door check’ activity.
Ask students to line up at the door. Using the animals flashcards , choose one and don’t show the students. Then, ask the students one by one to guess what animal card you are holding by using the key expression “Is that a (tiger)?”.
Give each student 3 guesses, and if they guess correctly, they can go. If they guess wrong, they must go to the back of the line. This activity is a great way to review with each student individually and to check their understanding of the lesson.

ESL Animals Activities and Games
Are you ready to get into the teaching animals for ESL activities? Then keep on reading for the best animal games and activities for English learners.
#1: 20 Questions
One of my favourite games to play when I teach the animal unit is 20 questions. Because the secret thing is limited to an animal, I usually make it into a “10 questions” game or it’s too easy. The way it works is that students have to answer yes/no questions to uncover which animal you’re secretly thinking of.
You can find out more about how to play this game with English learners here: 20 Questions for ESL .
#2: Animal Charades
If you want to have some serious fun teaching your students about animals, then you’ll want to consider playing animals charades. The way it works is that a student has to act out an animal and then their teammates need to guess what they’re doing.
Try it out with your students today! Charades for ESL/EFL .
#3: Animal Videos
It’s easier than ever these days for English teachers because there is a video for just about vocabulary set, topic or grammatical point on YouTube or English Central. But, you can get way more out of them if you don’t just put the video on and hit play.
There are a ton of pre and post watching activities you can do with your students. Check out some of them right here: Using Videos in the ESL Classroom .
#4: Flashcard Sentences
In my opinion, flashcards are one of the most under utilized ESL teaching tools. They are super versatile and you can do a ton of things with them. One way that they work really well is with animals. For a ton of ideas about how to use them in your classes, you’ll want to check this out:
ESL Flashcard Activities and Games.
#5: The Memory Circle Game
This circle game is one of my favourite memory games for TEFL and it’s the ultimate word category game . The way it works is that students have to stand up in a circle. The first students says an animal and then the next students repeats the first one and adds their own. And so on it goes until a student can’t remember and they have to sit down.

#6: The Hot Potato Game
If you want to create some pure fun and excitement in your classes, then you’ll want to consider trying out the hot potato game. The way it works is that students pass an object of some kind around the classroom. When the timer or music stops, the person holding the object has to do something.
In this case, you may want to hold up a flashcard with an animal on it. Beginners may have to say the name of the animal, while more advanced students could say three facts about it. For example (horse):
- It has three legs
- You can find it in the wild or on farms
- Horses are many different colors
You can learn more about how to use this activity in your classes right here: ESL Hot Potato Game .
#7: Can/Can’t Game
Animals and the grammatical constructions of can and can’t are often combined in many ESL textbooks. For example:
- A horse can run fast.
- A horse can’t fly.
If you want a fun game that uses can and can’t, you’ll want to check this out. And of course, you can easily gear it towards animals.
ESL Can/Can’t Activity .

#8: Flip-Chart Vocabulary Review
If you want to review key vocabulary terms like new animals, then you’ll definitely want to consider flip-chart. The way it works is that you write a bunch of the target vocabulary in a notebook. Then, the first team sends up a captain to the front of the class. His or her teammates describe the word to that person who has to guess what it is. The team with the most number of points at the end of the time is the winner.
Sounds like it’ll work well for your students? You can check it out here: ESL Vocabulary Review Game .
#9: Animal Trivia
I love to bring trivia into my classroom because it’s a challenging, fun activity that students seem to love. Check out some of my favourite animal themed questions right here:
ESL Animal Trivia .

#10: Would you Rather?
This is a versatile ESL speaking activity that lends itself very well to many different kinds of topic and units, including animals. In this case, students could choose between two animals and then explain why they chose the one that they did. For example,
Would you rather be a bird or a dolphin?
Do you want to find out more about this activity? You can check out the details for yourself about this activity that’s ideal for an ESL animals lesson plan right here: Would you Rather for ESL.
#11: I’m an Alien
If you want to elicit a bunch of information about various kinds of animals, then consider using this simple activity: I’m an Alien .
#12: Animal ESL Bingo
Bingo is a fun game that most students like to play. However, simply saying the words often doesn’t have much educational value. Instead, I make it into a serious listening challenge by describing the animals by giving hints instead of just saying the word. For example:
- It has 4 legs and lives on a farm.
- You maybe had it for breakfast—bacon!
Do you want to try out this version of Bingo? Learn more here: ESL Speaking Bingo .

- Smith, Jennifer Booker (Author)
- 134 Pages - 03/31/2016 (Publication Date)
#13: What Am I?
Try out this simple ESL icebreaker with animals! The way it works is that each student has a post-it note with an animal on it that they can’t see but the other students can. Then, they have to circulate around the class asking yes/no questions to find out their animal.
Sounds like your students will like it? Learn more here: What Am I ESL Game .
#14: Task-Based Language Activities
For the animal unit, you could certainly consider doing some task-based activities. They’re ideal because they allow the students to learn what they want to learn in terms of grammar and vocabulary.
In this case, you might consider having students do a research project about an animal of their choosing and then making a brochure or doing a presentation to the class.
Do you want to know more about this style of teaching? You can learn more here: Task Based Learning and Teaching .

- 81 Pages - 06/22/2021 (Publication Date)
#15: A-Z Alphabet Game
If you know that students already know a fair amount of animal vocabulary, then you may want to consider using this game as a warmer. The way it works is that students have to try to think of one animal per letter of the alphabet in a certain amount of time. Most students won’t complete the activity but the group with the most animals is the winner.
Try it out here: A-Z ESL Game .
#16: Picture Prompt
This is an easy warmer activity to introduce your students to animals. Chances are, they already know a good deal of this vocabulary and this activity can help them activate their prior knowledge.
Depending on the level of your students, you could ask them various questions:
- What animals do you see?
- What’s going on in the picture?
- What’s going to happen next?
More details here: ESL Picture Warm-Up .
#17: Animal Songs
You can find an animal song or chant for all ages and levels on YouTube! Just have a look and you’ll be able to easily find what you’re looking for.
#18: Animal Chain Spelling
A quick, easy way to review spelling of key animal vocabulary words is to play this game. The way it works is that students have to spelling out words, letter by letter until only one person remains. Find out how to play this activity that’s perfect for an ESL animals lesson plan right here:
Chain Spelling ESL Game .
#19: Flip Chart Animal Vocab Review Game
#20: esl animal board game.
In real life, I love to play board games. So it makes sense that I’d use them a lot in my classes too, right? The good news is that it’s super easy to make your own for just about any topic, vocabulary set or grammar point. For animals, you could either ask some questions like the following:
- What’s your favourite animal? Why?
- Do you have any pets?
- If you could choose any pet, what would it be?
Or, give hints:
- It has 4 legs and lives on a farm
- Name 3 animals that people eat
- What’s the biggest animal?
Find out all the details you need to know here:
ESL Board Games .

- 82 Pages - 06/10/2020 (Publication Date)
#21: Running Dictation Game for Teaching Animals
Just ask my students and they’ll tell you that running dictation is one of my favourite activities. It’s student-centred, covers a range of skills and is ideal for the animal unit with more advanced level students. Beginners may find it too challenging.
The way it works is that you have to find, or write a conversation about animals. Then, students have to work in pairs to dictate it. After that, they have to put the conversation in the correct order. Try it out with your students:
Running Dictation.
#22: Kindergarten Games and Activities
Little kids love learning about animals. It’s one of their favourite topics and I like to include it into my young learner English classes as much as I can. For some of the best ideas for teaching kids, you’ll want to check this out:

If this is the case, consider using some of these engaging and interactive activities:
ESL Comparative/Superlative Activities .
#25: Guessing Game
This is a simple warm-up activity that’s ideal for getting students talking about animals. Prepare a handout of PowerPoint slide with various animals on it.
In pairs, students have to take turns describing one of them to their partner who has to guess what it is. This also works well for things like jobs, food or drink , or famous people. Find out more about it:
ESL Guessing Game .
#26: Dictation
#27: dictogloss.
If you teach more advanced-level students, then you may want to consider using this challenging listening activity. Find or write a passage that contains lots of the target vocabulary. In this case, animals or words related to their abilities.
Then, put students into pairs and read out the passage at a faster-than-normal pace. Have students take notes and then work together to attempt to recreate what they heard. Repeat the process again and in the end, each pair can compare what they have with the original version.
Sounds fun? It is! Learn more about it:

Visit Moscow Zoo
Moscow Zoo has more than 5,000 animals, so it really has something for everyone. Whether you are a fan of butterflies, bears, leopards or llamas, get close to these magnificent animals and learn more about them.
The brainchild of Professor A.P. Bogadanov, the zoo was established in 1864. At its height of popularity, 200,000 people came here annually to see its animals, which included lions and tigers. At the beginning of the 20th century, it fell into disrepair. Battles took place here during the 1905 Russian Revolution. Following a period of decline under Soviet rule, the zoo underwent a series of renovations in 1991, 1997 and 2014. Now visit this pleasant place to view more than 750 different species.
Look for the zoo’s distinctive entrance, which was built to commemorate Moscow’s 850th anniversary in 1997. As you enter the zoo, note the rustic stonework and quaint towers, which give it the appearance of a mythical castle made of rock. Come through its doors to see the myriad animals inside. Big attractions close to the entrance include subterranean viewing platforms that allow you to watch penguins and sea lions frolicking in the water.
See the incredible endangered Far Eastern leopards. Just dozens of these natural inhabitants of Russia, China and Korea remain in the wild. Other big cats held here include the rare white tiger and the Siberian tiger, another native Russian animal. Both polar bears and brown bears live inside the zoo too. Watch these creatures from a safe vantage point.
The zoo’s special facilities and activities will interest younger visitors. Come to the petting zoo and see baby chicks crack open their shells. Learn more about Russian fairy tales here, many of which feature chicken, cats and goats in leading roles.
The Moscow Zoo has an entrance fee. Reach the area via the metro to Barrikadnaya station. The zoo is open every day except Mondays.

1. all around the kremlin.

Start from the Alexandrovsky Sad (Alexander Garden), a highlight of Moscow center. The garden is famous for its architectural monuments, incredibly beautiful flowerbeds and history. The Eternal Flame in the memory of the fallen heroes in the World War II glows in front of the Kremlin Kutafya Tower. Alexandrovsky Sad is a place that is impossible to miss, if you are going to the Kremlin , a symbol of the Russian State, one of the greatest architectural ensembles in the world, a treasury of amazing relics and monuments of art. On the way from the Kremlin to the Red Square , you will find the State History Muzeum , with a wonderful collection of artworks, depicting Russian history. Red Square remains, as it has been for centuries, the heart and soul of Russia. Few places in the world bear the weight of history to the extent that Moscow’s central square does. From the 16th Century St. Basil’s Cathedral – one of the most famous pieces of architecture in the world – to the constructivist pyramid of Lenin’s Mausoleum , Red Square is rich in symbols of Russia’s turbulent and intriguing past. Right at the Square there is one of the oldest and most remarkable shopping centers in Moscow – the GUM . Just several trading passages in Russia were created over a century ago and successfully operate until nowadays. GUM always was, and remains the greatest country’s store. To have some rest you can go to recently opened Zaryadye Park and enjoy breathtaking views of The Moscow Kremlin from the floating bridge, listen to some classic concerts or try local food from different regions of Russia.
